My soul I'd sacrifice for a beauty I saw
As if she were a pearl, so pure
I saw her reading in a notebook
Preoccupied with it, oblivious to me
So I said, woe to the world that suffers
For her, and pages live revived
If only I were that page
Or a word, or a dot thereon
That I might touch her soft hand
Or inhale her sagacious breath
