Do not weep for him: today his life begins.

For a writer's life lies in his death.

Your weeping could have enriched him while he was

still alive, excelling in his critiques.

He runs, and his livelihood runs ahead of him.

Wretched is he who earns his bread by pens.

Teach your sons something other than eloquence, for it

is woe to its possessor and a sickness in his life.

And it is a calamity that our writer should be drained by

the night of misery, while dawn lies folded in his inkwell.

Ah, my brother, you have found rest from toil

and the struggle of a life whose pleasures you never tasted.

Take comfort: you are not the first writer

in the East to fall a martyr to his writings.

And be content with your grave: it is a fitter dwelling

than a homeland where none but its oppressors have triumphed.
