    The Lord of existence said one day to the sun,

    as she smiled radiantly upon existence:

    ها يهزُّ السريرُ كالغلمانِ

    “O power that We have sent forth—

    it rocks the couch as boys do;

    ض حياةً ورحمةَ وضياءَ

    through it We made the earth’s heat

    life, mercy, and radiance;

    and of Our light, surpassing all description,

    We made your shining ray an image.

    Which quality among all We have bestowed upon you

    draws you nearer to Us in station and loftiness?”

    She answered, hiding behind the cloud

    out of shyness before her Lord’s face:

    عَ في خلقهِ الورى ما شاءَ

    “O great Creator, You who fashioned

    among creation whatever beings You willed;

    لاكُ ليست لديهِ إِلّا هَباءَ

    before whom earth, planets, and the celestial

    spheres are nothing but dust;

    and for whom the easiest of matters

    is to turn me now into black coal:

    One quality that draws me near Your sublimity

    would suffice me as reward and recompense.

    ض فُتحيي الأشخاصَ والأَشياءَ

    It is not my diffusing heat throughout the earth,

    bringing people and things to life;

    كونُ منها مهابةً وسناءَ

    nor my sending rays by which the universe

    is clothed in majesty and splendor;

    بٍ من النارِ تُلهبُ الأرجاءَ

    nor my crossing the horizons, sweeping in a robe

    of fire that sets every quarter ablaze;

    مةِ لبنانَ تزدهي بيضاءَ

    nor my melting the snows upon the summit

    of Lebanon, so that it gleams white;

    مِ ثياباً حمراءَ أو صفراءَ

    nor my adorning the sky with clouds

    like garments of red or yellow;

    nor my lingering before the mirror of this sea,

    beholding myself awhile within its waters.

    For all this, my Lord, I do not hope

    to win glory or exaltation.

    Rather, it is my sending a ray into the depths

    of a prison that holds darkness and misery,

    intending to dry a tear upon an eyelid

    that discerned hope within that ray.

    That deed is worthier to draw me near

    You, my God, and it merits praise.

    On earth, as in the sky, there are suns:

    they have acquitted themselves more nobly and possess fuller intelligence.

    They rose to aid the weak; after that, can

    women be accused of weakness?

    For a girl to be charitable is more honorable

    to me than for her to be beautiful.

    The fairness of complexions, though pleasing to the eye,

    cannot equal pure-white virtues in worthiness of praise.

    How can I adequately praise them for a deed

    for which they seek no reward?

    Even if I arranged the stars into

    verse about them, I could not render praise in full.

    O people, dominion belongs only to God

    Most High, who gives it to whomever He wills.

    All that is in your hands comes from His hand,

    and to Him is the certain return, by decree.

    ان صنع الجميل يرضي السماءَ

    So seek His countenance by doing what is beautiful;

    indeed, doing what is beautiful pleases heaven.”
