Wipe away the blackness from the lashes of the eyes.

And wipe away the redness of dusky lips mingled with kisses.

For I do not desire the eye's lid lined with kohl,

And I seek nothing but the blush of bashfulness.

And my soul desires you to be nothing but pure,

Like the heart's tears in the flask of love poetry.

O daughter of Lebanon, O beacon in my darkness,

Be a life that walks among my bones.

And in my eyes be a mirror in which I see you,

And in my heart be solace for my pains.

For you are a symbol of my promptings and inspiration,

I saw it through the windows of my love and my dreams.

O daughter of Lebanon, be a part of my liver,

And walk with me in this world, hand in hand.

For yesterday you were a girl playing games,

But you have come of age, and today is no longer play.

For you are a sister who will console life tomorrow,

And you are a mother to this universe the day after tomorrow.

O daughter of Lebanon, daughter of glory and eminence,

O gazelle that frolicked in the garden of moringa trees,

Take your blush from the meadow flowers, for in

the meadows are blossoms of the second world's purity.

And line your eyelid with good manners, and take pride

In your kohl coming from the gardens of Lebanon.

    فَالثُغرُ ما اِنشَقَّ كَي يجني عَلى الأَدبِ

    Let someone other than you sell her lips for gold;

For lips did not part to transgress against decency.

Nor did the honey of mouths have a price,

So do not sell love drawn from that honey.

You have been known as pure, so remain steadfast.

Do not trade Arabian jasmine for thorns and firewood.

O daughter of Lebanon, how exalted is your name!

For flowers reap their fragrance from your virtues.

You are the daughter of generosity handed down since ancient times,

And where the gazelles of al-Mardit dwell is your abode.

So if a wretched soul's lament rises to you,

Toss Lazarus something of your bounty.

One night, when sleep had eluded my eyes,

I went out to let my thoughts roam with two friends.

Then I saw the stars of night draw together as they traveled,

And each pair of stars walked in harmony.

And the full moon appeared between two clouds,

Like a jewel between two breasts.

So I said, as my soul outran hope's forerunner:

Harmony is the foundation of diligence and work.

For in a young woman are lessons from which we draw light.

Indeed, a young woman is the life of a man's heart.

If she is enlightened and joins him in fellowship, clasping hands,

The blood of strength flows through the heart of nations.
