We are Eden, and they are a disquieting place,

where eyes and hearts have suffered.

Love poured God's mercy into us,

so radiance and fragrances surge through us.

All our happy veins are, for faith,

a channel, and for hope, paths

    that lead us to bliss

supreme; beneath its spell we fade and melt.

You, Layla, you are the loveliest vision

poured into eyes by a wondrous dream.

Since Eve, people have never seen a beauty

with this dew and this flame.

What a hue, like morning, bearing

a pallor from remnants of the deep dawn!

Did your eyes scoop it amid mysteries

that are the strange imaginings of your soul?

When shadows of the eyelashes float upon it,

    its blazing whiteness dims.

Is there wine upon your cheeks, Layla,

that has set their dew ablaze—or milk?

Or upon your cheeks is the shadow of sins

from a harlot who came to you to repent?

Your beauty is beauty itself, and for creation

a blessing; all the rest is sin.

You said, 'Say more,' and smiled; then there shone

within my being, uncharted lands and peoples.

And springs flowed through my blood; never

had fertile soil lived on the like of them.

And a choir of birds within my soul

sang, making it a jubilant world within me.

All within me blossomed and sang, but

the nightingale faltered upon my tongue.

You said, 'In your beautiful silence is a tale

the like of which no gifted mouth has told.

    إِنَّهُ في جَوارِحي مَكتوبُ

    So with my soul I heard what you did not say;

it is written in my limbs.'

Then you kissed a little twig in your hands,

and your outpoured heart flowed through it.

And you tied it in my hair, and upon my eye

imprinted a smile that never vanishes.

I asked, 'What?' You said, 'A wreath of love.'

Thus does the beloved honor the beloved.

Crowns will wither, Layla, and the sultan—

    his bound brow will wither.

And wreaths will wither and wear away,

and the laurel that never grays will turn gray.

And upon the crown of my head and in my heart will remain

your fresh branch, alive and tender.
