بَكَتshe wept وَهيَwhile she was صَرعىstricken مِنby هُمومٍcares تَحيقُهاbesetting her
كَبائِسَةٍlike a wretched woman فيamong الناسِpeople ضاعَتwere lost حُقوقُهاher rights
She wept, laid low by cares that beset her,
like a wretched woman among people, her rights lost.
وَصارَتand she began تَواليfollowing up بِالشَهيقِwith gasping sobs أَنينَهاher moaning
فَأَسمعنيso made me hear لحنَthe melody of الحَياةِlife شَهيقُهاher sobbing
And she began following her moans with gasping sobs,
so her sobbing made me hear the melody of life.
وَأَلقَتand she laid عَلىupon صَدريmy breast مِنout of الحُزنِsorrow رَأسهاher head
غَريبَةُa woman estranged دارٍfrom home قَدalready نَآهاhad forsaken her صَديقُهاher friend
And in sorrow she laid her head upon my breast,
a woman far from home, her friend having forsaken her.
وَأَدمعُهاand her tears كانَتwere رَحيقاًnectar مذوَّباًmelted
فَأَكسرَso broke قَلبيmy heart المُستَهامَlovesick رَحيقُهاher nectar
And her tears were molten nectar,
so her nectar broke my lovesick heart.
وَلمّاand when اِستَتَبَّtook firm hold النَومُsleep فيin غُلبِoverpowering عَينِهاher eye
وَنامَand slept كَماas نامَslept الجَريحُthe wounded one خفوقُهاher heartbeat
And when sleep had firmly overpowered her eyes,
and her heartbeat slept as the wounded sleep,
سكتُّI fell silent فَلَمso did not أَلهَثpant حذارfor fear of تَنهدّيmy sighing
يَمُرُّit passes عَلىover أَجفانِهاher eyelids فَيفيقُهاand so awakens her
I fell silent, without a gasp, lest my sigh
should pass over her eyelids and awaken her.
وَكانَand was ظَلامُthe darkness of اللَيلِnight يرخيletting down سدولَهits curtains
وَأَنجُمهُand its stars يذويmakes wither النُفوسَsouls بَريقُهاtheir glitter
And the darkness of night was letting down its curtains,
and the glitter of its stars made souls wither.
كَأَنَّas though شُعاعَthe radiance of الزُهرthe bright stars فيin شاسِعِthe vast expanse of الفَضاspace
سِهامٌarrows عَلىupon قَلبِthe heart of الوُجودِexistence مروقُهاtheir piercing flight
As though the bright stars' radiance in the vastness of space
were arrows whose flight pierced the heart of existence.
فَقُلتُso I said وَفيand in صَدريmy breast مِنof الدَمعِtears بركَةٌa pool
تحمَّلَhad borne أَقذارthe filth of الحَياةِlife عَميقُهاits depths
So I said, with a pool of tears in my breast,
whose depths had borne the filth of life:
إِذاif كانَتِis الظَلماءُdarkness فيناamong us مُنيرَةًluminous
فَأَحرىthen all the more fitting بِهاfor it أَلّاnot to يَزولَfade غسوقُهاits deep darkness
If darkness is luminous among us,
then all the more should its deep gloom never lift.
أَحَقُّmore fitting بِناfor us الظَلماءُdarkness منfrom كُلِّevery وجهَةٍpoint of view
فَفيناfor among us وُجوهٌfaces يُستَبَدُّrules despotically صَفيقُهاthe brazen among them
Darkness better befits us in every way,
for among us are faces whose brazen ones rule as tyrants.
وَفيناand among us حَزازاتٌrancors إِلىto البَغيoppression تَنتَميbelong
وَفيناand among us شفاهٌlips منfrom طِلىthe wine of الحِقدِhatred ريقُهاtheir saliva
And among us are rancors born of oppression,
and among us are lips whose saliva is the wine of hatred.
نَظَرتُI looked إِلىat مَنthe one خدَّدَhad furrowed الدَمعُtears خدَّهاher cheek
فَأَلفَيتُso I found شَمساًa sun لاnot يَغيبُdisappears شُروقُهاits dawning
I looked at the one whose cheek tears had furrowed,
and found a sun whose dawning never fades.
كَأَنَّas though نثارَthe scattered drops of الدَمعِtears تبرٌgold dust بِعَينِهاin her eye
يذوِّبهُmelts it فَوقover العَقيقِcarnelian مريقُهاthe one who sheds them
As though the scattered tears were gold dust in her eye,
melted over carnelian by the one who sheds them.
فَقُلتُso I said عَزيزٌhard to bear ياO بَنيsons of الشَرقthe East أَنthat نَرىwe see
الفَضيلَةَvirtue يَمشيmoves فيin المَكاسِدِstagnant markets سوقُهاher trade
So I said: It is hard, O sons of the East, to see
virtue's trade moving through stagnant markets.
تَهيمshe wanders aimlessly وَلاand does not تَدريknow طَريقَthe way to نَجاتِهاher deliverance
كَأَنَّas though ضلالَthe straying of العالَمينَall humankind طَريقُهاher path
She wanders, not knowing the way to her deliverance,
as though all humankind's straying were her path.
هيَshe الزهرةُthe flower البَيضاءُwhite فيamid عوسَجِthe thornbushes of الوَرىhumankind
يحفّgathers بِهاaround her شوكُthe thorns of الخَناlewdness وَيُحيقُهاand besets her
She is the white flower amid humanity's thornbushes,
the thorns of lewdness surround and beset her.
وَقَدand already عَصَفَتraged ريحٌa wind عَلَيهاagainst her شَديدَةٌfierce
فَنَثَّرهاso scattered her مِثلlike الدُموعِtears خريقُهاits violent blast
And a fierce wind had raged against her,
so its violent blast scattered her like tears.
هيَshe النِجمَةُthe star الزَهراءُradiant فيin حَدَقِthe pupils of الدُجىdarkness
يُسامِرُهاkeeps her company by night بَدرُthe full moon of العَفافِchastity شَقيقُهاher brother
She is the radiant star in the pupils of darkness,
the full moon of chastity, her brother, keeps her company by night.
وَلكِنَّand yet غيمَthe cloud of الجَهلِignorance لاصِقَclung to نورَهاher light
فَحَجَّبَهاso veiled her عنfrom كُلِّevery عينٍeye لَصيقُهاwhat clung to her
But ignorance's cloud clung to her light,
so what clung to her veiled her from every eye.
هيَshe اِبنَةُthe daughter of آماليmy hopes وَلكِنand yet سَجينَةٌa prisoner
تناسىchose to forget هَواهاher love الكُلُّeveryone حَتّىeven عَشيقُهاher lover
She is the daughter of my hopes, yet a prisoner;
everyone chose to forget her love, even her lover.
يَشوقstirs longing in فُؤاديmy heart أَنto يَراهاsee her طَليقَةًfree
وَلكنand yet قُيودُthe chains of الظُلمِinjustice لَيسdoes not يشوقُهاstir their longing
My heart longs to see her free,
but the chains of injustice feel no such longing.
غَفَتshe slept مِلءَto the full of عَينَيهاher eyes وَلكِنَّand yet روحَهاher soul
تَرَدَّدَechoed فيin صَدرِthe breast of الحَياةِlife زُهوقُهاits passing
She slept her fill, yet her soul—
its passing echoed within the breast of life.
كَأَنَّas though الَّذيthe one who أَخنىbrought ruin عَلَيهاupon her بِجورِهthrough his injustice
إِلىto هوَّةِthe abyss of الإِعدامِannihilation جاءَcame يَسوقُهاdriving her
As though he who had ruined her through his injustice
had come to drive her into the abyss of annihilation.
أَشاحَturned away خَيالُthe phantom of الحُبِّlove عَنهاfrom her بِوَجهِهِwith its face
وَأَعرَضَand turned away عَنهاfrom her فيin الحَياةِlife رَفيقُهاher companion
The phantom of love turned its face away from her,
and her companion in life turned away from her.
فَماso not وَجَدَتshe found إِلاexcept المَدامِعَtears مُؤنِساًa companion
لذلِكَfor that reason فيin كلِّevery الظُروفِcircumstance تُريقُهاshe sheds them
So she found no companion except tears;
therefore she sheds them in every circumstance.
