Shafiq was still alone,
Shafiq was always secluded
on the left side of the sanctuary,
In the left side of the temple

pondering his locked-away love.
Thinking of his locked up love
He questioned his heart, but it did not speak;
Questioning his heart, it does not speak

and the heart is a secret throbbing in love.
And the heart is a secret in passion that throbs
Then, when he saw his withering jasmine blossom—
So when he saw his crazy passion

Ghalwa, with her bleeding liver—
Ferocious with a bleeding liver
still supplicating in the corner,
Remaining imploring in the corner

he said: Awake, O Love, from your slumber;
He said: Wake up, oh love, from your slumber
for the Lord of Sorrows, in your church,
The master of sorrows is in your pact

loved even Mary the harlot.
He loved even Mary the adulteress
Then he approached her, and in his eye
Then he approached her with tears in his eyelids

were tears, with love circling in their wave,
Tears where love tosses in its waves
like a splinter hurled from his heart.
Like flotsam thrown from its tide

Ghalwa shuddered with fright,
So the ferocious one recoiled in her horror
and her breaths surged within her breast,
And breaths flared up in her chest

as though she were a volcano in eruption.
As if she were a volcano in its eruption
He said spontaneously: These are my tears;
So he said gently: These are my tears

they intercede for me, O Ghalwa; so intercede.
Intercede for me, oh ferocious one, so intercede
I drew them, drop by drop, from my aching heart.
I dropped them from my aching heart

Their waves carry from my blood
a tale of love that never issued from a mouth,
A love story that has not come out of my mouth

I cast my heart down as a brazier for love.
I lay bare my glowing heart to passion
Ghalwa murmured: How impious it is!
So the ferocious one muttered, how unfaithful

This love passes, and remorse comes.
This passion goes on, and regret comes after
She gazed a while at the enamored man,
And she stared for a while at the lovesick one

While her heart in her dark chest
walked, in anguish, in a funeral procession.

and sank into an obscure dream.
And sank into an ambiguous dream
He said: No, no—do not turn away, for misery
So he said: No, no, do not turn away, for misery

willed, O Ghalwa, that I be created,
Wanted, oh ferocious one, for me to be created
that I should know love and fall in love.
To know love and to fall in love

That your eyes reveal to this image

Scarcely had he fallen silent when he bowed down.
And he had just become silent when he fell prostrate

Love's sanctuary—no one is abased within it.
The holiness of passion, no one has ever humbled like this
As though his sanctuary were in her eye,
As if in her eyelids is His temple

Where he sees the Lord of Golgotha
opening fresh wounds for love.
Opening fresh wounds for love

In your extinguished chest, the ignited one

And your eyes drowned in tomorrow's sea
And his eye came upon the altar,
And her eyelids met the altar

And the image of the virgin, so he said: Bear witness

He said: Bear witness that passion testifies
O worshipped image of Mary,
Oh image of Mary who is worshipped

O hearth of love that offers no praise,
Oh igniter of love that cannot be blamed
Love is fires that light the heavens,
Love is fires that light up the sky

and send light to us whenever
So it sends light to us whenever
the time comes for our meeting with God.
An appointment with God comes to us

Rays from the Creator's eye
Rays from the Creator's eyelids

That melt in the ardent livers

mingling the Creator with the lover.
So it mixes the Creator with the lover
And God did not fashion the human heart
And God did not create the human heart

To remain dormant like a stone
for fire is in its beating substance.
So the fire in its throbbing element

He said to her: Your heart—how grievous it is!
He said to her: Your heart, how it agonized
O God, how cruel it is, how painful!
Oh God, how cruel, how painful it was

Speak; I long to hear it.
Speak, I want to hear it
I long to bend my ribs for it,
I want to bend my ribs for it

into an arch of love, so it may remain with me
An arc of love, so it stays with me
as long as life endures, and I remain with it.
As long as life remains, and I remain with it
أَوَدُّI long أَنto أَفرُشَspread out عَينَيَّmy eyes لَهfor it

I long to spread out my eyes for it.
I want to spread my eyes out for it
Here are my tears; I long for it to devour them.
For passion makes the crucifixion easier
Golgotha
لَيسَis not الهَوىlove ياO أُختَsister روحيmy soul سوىother than
Indeed, love makes Golgotha easier to bear.
Passion, oh sister of my soul, is nothing but
Love, O sister of my soul, is nothing but
The sacrifice of souls, passion is not
قُربانَةِthe communion wafer الاِرواحِof souls لَيسَis not الهَوىlove
فَغَمغَمَتthen she murmured غلواGhalwa سوىother than مهزَلَهa farce
the souls' communion wafer; love is nothing—
So the ferocious one muttered: nothing but nonsense
Ghalwa murmured: But a farce.
And she left him in a deepening unnamed
وَغادَرتُهُand she left him (context) فيin اسمىًunclear; perhaps sorrow موغِلِdeepening
منfrom مُشكِلٍa perplexity يُزَجىis driven الىto مُشكِلِa perplexity
And she left him in deepening sorrow [reading uncertain],
From one problem tossed to another
driven from one perplexity to another,
Like someone wandering in his long night
كَمُدلِجٍlike a night-traveler فيin لَيلِهِhis night الأَليَلِdarkest
فَقالَthen he said هذاthis الحُبُّlove منwho أَنزَلَهsent it down
like a night-traveler in his darkest night.
So he said: Who has revealed this love?
He said: This love—who sent it down?
So the nonsense echoed in his hearing
فَرَنَّthen rang فيin مِسمَعِهِhis ear المهزَلَهthe farce
وَرَجَّعتَهاand echoed it قُبَّةُthe dome الهَيكَلِthe sanctuary
And “farce” rang in his ear,
And the temple dome returned it
and the sanctuary's dome echoed it back.
