Rafina, come with a cup of wine and an ember
We raised a glass of wine and a water pipe
For my hookah; then close the door and go.
For my cigarette, then close the door and go
وَلاand do not تَدَعيlet أُمّيmy mother تَفيقُwake منfrom الكَرىslumber
فَإِنّيfor I سَأَقضيI shall spend اللَيلَthe night داخِلَinside مَكتَبيmy study
And do not let my mother wake from slumber,
Don't let my mother wake from her slumber
For I shall spend the night inside my study.
For I will spend the night inside my study
هُوَit is اللَيلُnight لاno حسَّsound هُناكَthere وَلَيسَand there is no
سَميرٍnighttime companion يُؤسّيconsoles شَقوَتيmy misery غَيرُexcept كَوكَبِa star
It is night; there is no sound there, and no
It is the night where there is no feeling here
Companion to soothe my misery but a star,
No company but a wandering star in the endless space
سَرىtraveled by night فيin فَضاءexpanse اللانهايَةِinfinity هائِماًwandering
نَظيرَlike فُؤادِheart العاشِقِthe lover المُتَعَذِّبِtormented
That wandered by night through the expanse of infinity,
Like a lover's tortured heart
Like the heart of a tormented lover.
Suhad, months have passed
سُعادُSuad لَقَدindeed مَرَّتhave passed شُهورٌmonths عَديدَةٌmany
وَقَلبِيَand my heart يَمشيwalks فيin دُجُنَّةِdarkness غَيهَبِdeep gloom
Suad, many months have passed,
And my heart walks in the darkness of confusion
And my heart walks through pitch-black gloom.
Surrounded by thorns on every side
تَحفُّsurround بِهِaround it الأَشواكُthe thorns منfrom كُلِّevery جانِبٍside
كَأَنّيas though I بِهاamong them قَدalready خَبَّأتI had hidden أَلفَa thousand عَقرَبِscorpion
Thorns surround it on every side,
As if I hid a thousand scorpions in it
As though I had hidden a thousand scorpions among them.
Oh melt your injustice in love if you wish
أَلاcome now ذَوِّبيdissolve إِنif شِئتِyou wish جَورَكِyour cruelty فيin الهَوىlove
وَهذاand this فُؤاديmy heart يَشهَدُbears witness اللَهُGod فَاِسكُبيso pour
Come, dissolve your cruelty in love, if you wish;
If the fate has struck me with its claws
And here is my heart—God bears witness—so pour it in.
Then my claws must be strong against fate
إِذاif كانَhad أَبلانيworn me down مِنَof الدَهرِtime مخلَبٌa claw
فَلاthen no بُدَّalternative أَنthat يَقوىprevail عَلىover الدَهرِtime مَخلَبيmy claw
If a claw of time has worn me down,
Suhad, I see disease eating away my body
Then my claw must prevail over time.
And death's raven chirping above me, so sing to me
سُعادُSuad أَرىI see الأَسقامَthe ailments تَنخرُgnaw at هَيكَليmy frame
وَفَوقيand above me غُرابُraven المَوتِdeath يَشدوsings فَطِيِّبيso rejoice
Suad, I see ailments gnawing at my frame,
Have you not seen how the youth gather
And above me death’s raven sings—so rejoice.
But each has a different aspiration than mine
أَلَمhave you not تَنظُريseen الشُبّانَthe young men كَيفَhow تَوارَدَتflocked in
وَلكِنand yet لِكُلٍّfor each مَأرَبٌan aim غَيرُother than مَأربيmy aim
Have you not seen how the young men flocked in?
Leave me, leave me and follow another lover
But each has an aim unlike mine.
One with a big heart and sweet affection
دَعينيleave me دَعينيleave me وَاِتبَعيand follow غَيرَother than عاشِقٍa lover
يَكونis كَبيرَgreat القَلبِthe heart حُلوَsweet التَحَبُّبِwooing
Leave me, leave me, and follow someone other than a lover,
I have always been, since early youth
Who is great-hearted and sweet in his wooing.
Do you expect luck from a boy poet?
أَناI لَمhave not أَزَلceased وَالعُمرُwhile life فيin أَوَّلِthe beginning الصِباyouth
أَتَنتَظرينَdo you expect السَعدَhappiness منfrom شاعِرٍa poet صَبيa boy
I am still young, my life at the very dawn of youth;
Tomorrow you will lay your chaste neck
Do you expect happiness from a boy poet?
On the chest of that infatuated suitor
سُعادُSuad غداًtomorrow تَلقينَyou will lay عُنقَكِyour neck طاهِراًpure
عَلىupon صَدرِchest ذاكَthat الطالِبِthe suitor المُتَصَبِّبِsweating
Suad, tomorrow you will lay your pure neck
And forget the one whose tears dissolved
Upon the chest of that sweating suitor,
In your eyelids, melted away
وَتَنسينَand you forget مَنthe one who كانَتwere تَذوبُmelting دُموعُهhis tears
عَلىupon إِثمدٍantimony kohl فيin مُقلَتَيكِyour two eyes مُذَوَّبِdissolved
And forget the one whose tears would melt
Yes, forget him for he is a sinful infatuated one
Upon the kohl dissolved within your eyes.
More deserving of forgetfulness than any sinner
نعمyes فَاِنتَسيهso forget him فهوَfor he وَلهانlovesick مُذنِبٌa sinner
وَأَجدرُand more deserving بِالنِسيانِof being forgotten منthan كُلِّevery مُذنِبِsinner
Yes, forget him, for he is a lovesick sinner,
Isn't love a sin, as some have said?
And more deserving of oblivion than any sinner.
Then I am a sinner, for love is above my shoulders
أَلَيسَis it not الهَوىlove ذَنباًa sin كَماas قالَsaid بَعضُهُمsome of them
إِذنthen أَناI جانٍa culprit فَالهَوىfor love فَوقupon منكبيmy shoulder
Is love not a sin, as some of them have said?
But tomorrow, do not remember the flowers and basil
Then I am a culprit, for love rests upon my shoulder.
Or the jasmine of the field after sunset
وَلكِنand yet غَداًtomorrow لاdo not تذكريremember الزَهرthe blossoms وَالرُبىand the hills
وَلاand not ياسمينjasmine الحَقلِthe field ماthe time بَعدَafter مَغربِsunset
But tomorrow, do not remember the blossoms and the hills,
For remembering those symbols is sacred
Nor the jasmine of the field after sunset.
So do not taint it with fabricated memories
فَتِذكارُfor the remembrance هاتيكَthose الرُسومِthe traces مُقَدَّسٌsacred
فَلاso do not تَلمِسيهِtouch it بِاِذّكارٍwith remembrance مكذَّبِbelied
For the remembrance of those traces is sacred;
So do not touch it with a false remembrance.
