فيin لَيلَةٍa night تَنَهَّتshe sighed غَلواءُGhalwa
وَالبَدرُand the full moon فيin مَخدعِهاher bedchamber إِتاءُa vessel (apparently إناء)
One night Ghalwa sighed,
And the full moon in her bedchamber was a vessel,
تَسيلُflows مِنهُfrom it فِضَّةٌsilver بَيضاءُwhite
فَأَرهَفَتso she sharpened مِسمَعَهاher hearing المَطروقاstruck by sound
From which white silver flowed.
So she pricked up her startled ear,
فَسَمِعَتso she heard تَنَهُّداًa sigh عَميقاdeep
يَصدُرissuing عَمّاfrom what يَنهَشُgnaws at العُروقاthe veins
And heard a deep sigh,
Issuing from what gnaws at the veins.
وَأَرسَلَتand she cast نَظرَةَa glance بَرٍّa virtuous person طاهِرِpure
فَهاand behold لَهاbefore her فيin المَخدِعthe chamber المُجاوِرadjoining
And cast the glance of a pure, virtuous soul;
And lo, before her, in the adjoining chamber,
فَاِجرةٌa wanton woman عَلىupon ذِراعِthe arm of فاجِرِa wanton man
ماnot أَنتِyou ياO وَردَةُWarda تِلكَthat الوَردهthe rose
A wanton woman upon a wanton man's arm.
You are not, Warda, that rose.
بَلrather انتِyou منamong أَشواكهاits thorns مُسَوَّدَهblackened
أَميرَةَO princess الشَهوَةِlust أَنتِyou عَبدَهa slave
Rather, you are one of its blackened thorns.
O princess of lust, you are a slave.
أَيُّwhat خَيالٍphantom حَلَّsettled فيin غَلواءَGhalwa
What phantom had entered Ghalwa?
What burning, black visions
تَعَلَّقَتclung to أَجفانَهاher eyelids العَذراءَvirgin
فَهرَّبتso she fled الىto ضِفافِthe shores of البَحرِthe sea
Had clung to her virgin eyelids?
So she fled to the shores of the sea,
وَطَوَّفتand she wandered بَينamong بَقاياthe remnants of الدَهرtime
منfrom خِربَةٍa ruin لرجمةٍto a cairn لِقَبرِto a grave
And wandered among the remnants of time,
From ruin to cairn to grave.
وَكانَتand there were المِياهُthe waters وَالصُخورُand the rocks
قائِمَةًstanding ماthere بَينَهاbetween them القُبورُthe graves
And there were waters and rocks,
With graves standing in their midst;
حَتّىeven السُكونُthe stillness حَولَهاaround her مَسحورُbewitched
وَالمَوجُand the wave بَعدَafter الموجِthe wave كَيفَhow ذاباmelted away
Even the stillness around her was bewitched.
And wave after wave—how it melted away,
مُستَسلِماsurrendering عَلىover الحَصىthe pebbles مُنساباflowing
يقبِّلُkissing القُبورَthe graves وَالتُراباand the earth
Surrendering, gliding over the pebbles,
Kissing the graves and the earth.
كَأَنَّهُas though it were جَمعٌa throng منof العَذارىmaidens
أَوor ذِكرَياتُmemories of عاشِقa lover تَوارىwho vanished
As though it were a throng of maidens,
Or the memories of a lover who had vanished,
تَهمِسُwhispering فيinto أُذنِthe ear of الرَدىdeath أَسراراsecrets
وَلِلمِياهِand the waters have زَبدٌfoam كَثيفُdense
Whispering secrets into Death's ear.
And the waters bore a dense foam,
يُنسَجُis woven مِنهfrom it كَفَنٌa shroud خَفيفُlight
عَلَيهِupon it منfrom نورlight الدُجىthe night's darkness حُروفُletters
From which a light shroud was woven;
Upon it were letters of the night's light.
وَسَمِعَتand heard غَلواءُGhalwa طَيرَbirds البومِowls
يَنعَقُhooting كالشُؤمِlike an ill omen عَلىover الرُسومِthe ruins
And Ghalwa heard the owl
Hooting like an ill omen over the ruins,
مُدَنِّساًdefiling نَقاوَةَthe purity of النَسيمِthe breeze
وَاِستَيقظتand awoke فيin نَفسِهاher soul المَحمومَهfevered
Defiling the purity of the breeze.
And in her fevered soul awoke,
صارِخَةًscreaming أخيِلةُthe phantoms of الجَريمَهcrime
From beloved, sinful Warda,
The screaming phantoms of crime.
وَدبَّand crept فيinto أَعضائِهاher limbs النَحيفَهslender
قَفقَفَةٌa chattering shiver وَرِجفَةٌand a tremor عَنيفَهviolent
And into her slender limbs crept
A chattering shiver and a violent tremor.
حُمّىa fever سَرَتcoursed فيthrough جِسمِهاher body خَفيفَهslight
وَاِستَفحَلَتand worsened كَالشَرِّlike evil حينَwhen يَبدَأit begins
A slight fever coursed through her body,
And grew rampant, like evil when it begins:
فَهوَfor it is صَغيرٌsmall إِنَّماyet لاnot يَفتَأceases
حَتّىuntil يَصيرَit becomes نَقمَةًan affliction لاnot تَبرَأheals
For it is small, yet never ceases
Until it becomes an affliction beyond healing.
وَمَرَّتand passed الأَيّامُthe days وَاللَياليand the nights
سَوداءَblack بِالفِتنَةِwith temptation وَالجَمالِand beauty
And the days and nights passed,
Black with temptation and beauty,
فَأَصبَحتso became غَلواءGhalwa كَالخَيالِlike a phantom
وَبَرَزَتand protruded عِظامُهاher bones فيin الجِسمِthe body
So Ghalwa became like a phantom.
And her bones stood out in her body,
كَأَنَّهاas though they were أَقلامُthe pens of الاِعتِلالِillness
Aligned, bone beside bone,
As though they were the pens of illness,
تَكتُبُwriting فيon صَحيفَةthe page of الآجالِlife's appointed ends
وَسالَand flowed فيinto وَجنَتِهاher cheek الذُبولُwithering
Writing on the page of life's appointed ends.
And withering seeped into her cheek,
كَنِجمَةٍlike a star هَمَّthreatened بِهاit الأُفولُsetting
وَاِمتقَعَand grew pallid الجَبينُthe brow بِاِصفِرارِwith yellowness
Like a star with its setting imminent.
And her brow took on a yellow pallor,
كَأَنَّهُas though it were أَواخِرُthe last hours of النَهارِday
فيin لَيلَةٍa night شَديدَةintense in الغُسوقِdarkness
As though it were the last hours of day.
On a night of deepest darkness,
تَذكَّرتshe remembered حَياتهاher life فيin الزوقِZouk
وَذَكَرَتand recalled مَواكِبَthe processions of الضَبابِmist
She remembered her life in Zouk,
And recalled the processions of mist
تَمتَدُّstretching كَالحُلمِlike a dream عَلىover الهِضابِthe uplands
وَالشَجَرَand the trees الأَخضَرَgreen وَالسَنابِلاand the ears of grain
Stretching like a dream across the uplands,
And the green trees and ears of grain
تَبسُطُspreading لِلطَبيعَةِto nature الأَنامِلاthe fingers
وَذَكرتand recalled أَخيَلَةthe visions of المساءِevening
Spreading their fingers to nature.
And recalled the visions of evening,
وَرَنَّةَand the ringing of الأَجراسِthe bells فيin الهَواءِthe air
وَدَوحَةَand the spreading tree of الكَنيسَةِthe church الحَقيرَهhumble
And the ringing of bells in the air,
And the spreading tree of the humble church,
وَبابَهاand its door الصَغيرَsmall وَالفَقيرهand the poor woman
وَصُفرَةَand the yellow glow of الشَمسِthe sun عَلىupon الجِبالِthe mountains
And its little door, and the poor woman,
And the sun's yellow glow upon the mountains,
وَلِعِبَand the play of الاطفالِthe children فيin الظِلالِthe shadows
وَاِحتَشَدتand thronged أَخيلَةُthe phantoms of التِذكارِremembrance
And the children's play in the shadows.
And the phantoms of remembrance thronged,
تَطوفُcircling أَسراباin flocks عَلىupon الجِدارthe wall
وَجَحَظَتand bulged فيwithin صَدرِهاher breast الآلامُthe pains
Circling in flocks upon the wall.
And pains stared wide-eyed within her breast,
كَجِفنِهاlike her eyelid المَحمومِfevered لاnot تَنامُsleeping
وَحَبَكَتand wove فيin مُقلَتَيهاher two eyes الحُمّىthe fever
Like her fevered eyelid, never sleeping.
And in her eyes the fever interwove
بِقَلبِهاwith her heart العَفيفِchaste ذاكَthat الإِثماsin
وَاِنتَقَلand passed الإِثمُsin بِهاthrough her اِنتِقالَهits passage
That sin with her chaste heart.
And sin made its passage through her,
أَجرَتsent flowing عَلىacross خَيالَهاher imagination خَيالَهits image
فَعَظُمَso grew الوَهمُdelusion وِفيand among الأَوهامِdelusions
Sending its image flowing across her imagination.
So delusion grew; there are delusions
أَفتَكُmore deadly بِالعَقلِto reason منthan السِرسامِbrain fever
وَقامَand arose فيin أَحلامِهاher dreams المُعَذَّبَهtormented
More deadly to reason than brain fever.
And in her tormented dreams arose
رُؤياa vision كَأَنَّماas though هيَshe herself المُرتَكِبَهthe perpetrator
A vision, as though she herself were the perpetrator.
