ياO مَنwho تَرىyou see الدُنياthe world بِثَغرِthrough the mouth of فَتاةِa maiden
إِيّاكَbeware (you) اَنthat تَمشيyou walk عَلىin خُطواتيmy footsteps
O you who see the world through a maiden's lips,
O you who see the world through a maiden's mouth,
Beware of walking in my footsteps.
Beware walking in my footsteps,
فيin الثَغرِthe mouth شهدٌhoney حُلوُهits sweetness مُرُّbitter
وَلكمand how often سَقانيgave me drink ذلِكَthat الثغرُmouth
In that mouth is honey whose sweetness is bitter;
In her mouth lies sweet honey that has often made me drunk,
And how often that mouth has given me drink!
Behind her lips lies a secret,
فيin مِرشَفَيهِits two lips يَنطَويlies concealed سِرُّa secret
يَخفيhides الدُموعَthe tears وَيظهرُand reveals البسماتِthe smiles
In its two lips lies a secret
That hides tears and shows smiles.
That hides tears and reveals smiles.
Do not weary yourself on earth seeking rest,
لاdo not تَجتَهِدstrive فيon الأَرضِthe earth كَيso that تَرتاحاyou may rest
الأَرضُthe earth لَيلٌa night لاnot يُريكَshows you صَباحاa morning
Do not strive on earth to find rest;
The earth is an endless night showing you no dawn,
The earth is a night that shows you no morning.
Take a lamp always in your right hand,
خُذtake فيin يَمينكَyour right hand دائِماًalways مِصباحاa lamp
كيماso that يَقيكَit protects you غوائِلthe perils of العَثراتِstumbles
Always take a lamp in your right hand,
So it protects you from the pitfalls of stumbling.
So it may protect you from the perils of stumbling.
How I have gazed up at the rising of moons,
كَمhow often قَدindeed رَقبتُI watched مَطالِعَthe risings of الأَقمارِthe moons
ماnot منany سَميرnight companion ليfor me سِوىexcept أَشعاريmy poems
How often I have watched the moons rise,
I have no friend but my own poetry,
With no companion by night but my poems,
Until when love broke my lyre,
حَتّىuntil إِذاwhen حطمshattered الهَوىlove قيثاريmy lyre
أَوتارهits strings اِنقَطَعَتwere severed عَنfrom النَغماتِthe melodies
Until, when love shattered my lyre,
Its strings were silenced of melodies.
Its strings were severed from melody.
When I felt that for love,
لمّاwhen شعرتُI felt بِأَنَّthat لِلحُبِّfor love
قَبراًa grave جَوانِبُهُits sides مِنof التُربِearth
When I felt that love had
There is a grave with sides made of dust,
A grave whose sides were of earth,
I saw within its depths my heart,
وارَيتُI buried فيin أَعماقِهits depths قَلبيmy heart
وَخَلَوتُand I withdrew alone بَعدئذٍafterward لِتذكاراتيto my memories
I buried my heart in its depths,
And was left alone afterwards with my memories.
And afterward I withdrew alone with my memories.
My body has withered, leaving but half,
جَسَديmy body اِنضَنىwasted away لَمdid not يَبقَremain إِلّاexcept نِصفُهُhalf of it
وَالنِصفُand the half مُقتَربٌdrawing near إِلَيهِto it حَتفُهits death
My body has wasted away; only half of it remains,
And that half is nearing its demise,
And death draws near to that half.
And of love, there remains but its fragrance,
وَمنand of الهَوىlove لَمdid not يَبقَremain إِلاexcept عَرفُهits fragrance
يَسريwafts إِلَيَّto me ضحىًat midmorning مَعَwith النَسماتِthe breezes
And of love, only its fragrance remains;
Drifting to me at dawn with the breeze.
It wafts to me at midmorning with the breezes.
Yesterday I was, a cup in my hand,
بِالأَمسِyesterday كُنتُI was وَفيand in يَديmy hand كاسيmy cup
أَرعىI tend الهَوىlove فيin قَلبِهاher heart القاسيhard
Yesterday, with my cup in my hand, I was
Letting love graze in her cruel heart,
Tending love in her hard heart;
And today I am, a staff in my hand,
وَاليَومَand today صِرتُI have become وَفيand in يَديmy hand راسيmy head
أَذريI shed الدُموعَthe tears وَأَطلقُand I let out الزَفَراتِthe sighs
And today, with my head in my hand, I am
Letting loose tears and sighs.
Shedding tears and letting out sighs.
Yesterday, all my hopes
بِالأَمسِyesterday كُنتُI was وَكلُّand all of آماليmy hopes
مَطروحَةٌlaid فيin صَدرِهاher breast الغاليcherished
Yesterday I had all my hopes
Were laid in her precious heart,
Laid in her cherished breast;
And today, woe to my state,
وَاليَومَand today واأَسَفيoh, my sorrow! عَلىover حاليmy plight
أَمسَتthey have become وَقدand already بَلَيتthey have decayed مَعَwith الأَمواتِthe dead
And today—alas for my plight!—
I have joined the dead.
They have now decayed among the dead.
O you who see the world through a maiden's mouth,
ياO مَنwho تَرىyou see الدُنياthe world بِثَغرِthrough the mouth of فَتاةِa maiden
إِيّاكَbeware (you) اَنthat تَمشيyou walk عَلىin خُطواتيmy footsteps
O you who see the world through a maiden's lips,
Beware walking in my footsteps.
Beware of walking in my footsteps.
Beware the drawn swords of calamity,
إِيّاكَbeware (you) أَسيافَthe swords of الرَدىdeath مَسلولَهunsheathed
وَقُلوبand the hearts of أَصحابِthe devotees of الهَوىlove مَقتولَهslain
Beware! The swords of death are unsheathed,
And the slain hearts of lovers.
And the hearts of lovers are slain.
Look to my state and take it as an example,
أُنظُرlook إِلىat حاليmy plight وَخُذand take أَمثولَهa lesson
أَوماand have ... not? ضَلَلتُI strayed عَلىon طَريقِthe path of حَياتيmy life
Look at my plight and take a lesson:
Have I not gone astray on the path of my life?
And have I not strayed on the path of my life?
