O bell, sobbing in the abyss of tears,

Your sobbing is the music of nature and life.

I heard you aloud, pouring tears among humankind,

Yet this loud sound is a spirit of mystery.

Listen when the gravedigger, after my dissolution,

Returns the remnants of my dust to the dust—

Remnants that are pains and tears and sorrow,

They are a daughter of night, making for the realm of dawn.

Pray for mercy, and do not make your ringing mournful,

And ring with melodies of joy over my grave.

And imitate the clang of the fetter when it was flung

Onto the prison threshold by the one freed from captivity.
