Night crouched in the arms of the hills,

    dark-cloaked, its shadows spread wide,

    فَاِعتَرى أَمواجَه صمتُ الجلال

    like a vast sea in which sorrow drowned;

then majestic silence overtook its waves.

And I am in my chamber; they do not draw back

from my eyelids—the tall demons of sleeplessness (wording uncertain).

Within my heart is an image born of my passion,

and upon my eyes, a vision born of my love.

Behold the full moon, in its fairest splendor,

rising behind the mountains of the east.

Its halo drowned in a cloud,

    like tears drowned in pupils,

or like the dreams of my nights, which had

    been dissolved amid blue vapor.

So night appeared drunk on what

had melted in its burning lips.

O girl, whose love lives between my ribs,

you hold a sacred place with me, guarded by my Lord.

There were hopes within my breast, and

my failure passed over them and erased them.

Indeed, my traces are in your eyes, so do not

deny them; may God make them last.

    كَم أَرَتني مُهجَتي عِندَ رُؤاها

    For they are the mirror of my heart in love;

how often it showed me my soul when I beheld it!

O my girl, beneath the jasmine blossoms,

we pledged ourselves to a faithful love.

The blossoms still smile for us,

a just witness to that oath.

So remember that, and the tears which

we shed with longing and yearning.

Those tears were water sent down,

baptizing love in the faith of lovers.

O my girl, I had an endeavor, and

my eyes and my hand came away empty of it.

If fortune has thwarted it, there is no

escaping a day of rising tomorrow.

    I am twenty—pardon me, I am

a beardless youth; do not trifle with a beardless youth.

Indeed, lion cubs have their hours of play,

and so the lovesick lover has his hours of play.

O my girl, if you take pride

when I am mentioned among the illustrious,

then let your pride be my heart, for it

has melted for your sake in the cup of lament.

    And if people boast tomorrow,

my pride is in the emblem of the wretched:

a reed pen, which I hung

above the history of immortal men.

A reed pen to which I whispered,

    while I kissed those cheeks.

If I have whispered to it since youth,

existence will whisper to it after me.

After me it will remain a trace,

by drawing glory on the tablet of immortality.

And time will peer out from its little window

to see how it is showered with roses.
