How have you torn down the edifice of justice

    To save the beautiful woman?

O judges, you have wronged justice so that you might

Show mercy to beauty in women’s eyes.

We have long known beauty to be a sword,

    Fine-edged, cutting, and keen.

We never knew it to be the law itself,

Unjust to the wretched among humankind.

    So if that beau—

    ty judges people in secret,

Seat it openly on the bench

And put it in place of the leaders.

Justice would then become an outrage,

And existence would sink into depravity.

The poor and weak would become humiliated,

And judgments would favor the rich.

How many innocent people have suffered in prison,

    Victims of blind laws?

And how many criminals spread corruption

Yet count among the innocent under your law?

O judges, justice is the greatest pillar

Of the order of the world.

How have you shrouded youth with a la—

w that vanished, stained with blood?

People had never before known that jus—

tice depended on wide, dark eyes,

Or that it had a heart pierced by an arrow

Of love for Marguerite deep within.

    فَاِحتَكِم ما تَشاءُ في الضّعفاءِ

    O beauty of women, you have been given judgment;

So rule over the weak as you please.

    لا تَخَف ما هُناكَ غَير القَضاءِ

    If you would shed blood, then be a tyrant;

Fear nothing: there is only the judiciary.
