    Ghalwa—how lovely the fragrant one!

A girl whom the virgins envy.

    No poet can create

A poem whose opening is lovelier than she.

    Imagine the flowers in May,

Revived by the quivering of lights.

    Imagine the morning breeze,

Shaking the stems of Arabian jasmine and daisies.

Imagine the sky in its splendor,

As though it were dreams in their purity.

Imagine the grasses in the mountains,

Dreaming in a cradle of shadows.

    لَوَّنها ظِلٌّ من الخَميلَه

    Imagine the beautiful hill,

    Colored by a shadow from the grove;

And heaps of snow upon the hills,

Over which floats the yellow of sunset.

And finally cast a fleeting glance

At the varied beauty of nature.

Then you will know, with sublime understanding,

    How heaven created Ghalwa.

And in Tyre she had a kinswoman,

Who was given the name of the beloved rose: Warda.

    Her beauty drives to madness

The flash of lust in the eyes.

You sense, from her blazing body,

A man's blood in every vein.

Imagine the volcano in its fury,

    Flames hurled from its mouth,

Like the harlot, in whose eye

Is an element of fire hewn from her lust.

Imagine death in a viper's fang,

    Sinister, slithering among flowers.

You mistake it, amid the blaze of light,

For a stream flowing through the flowers.

Imagine the consumptive, upon whose cheeks

Is a rosy flush on which youth floats.

You would think him spring at its dawn,

If you did not hear the cough in his chest.

And a frightened man who choked on his saliva,

Then sought a drop in his pitcher.

And if word rang out that a scorpion was there,

He would prefer choking to drinking.

And finally cast a fleeting glance

At the varied evils in nature.

Then loathing will be clear to you, so you will know

    How Hell desired Warda.

    And Ghalwa wished to visit

The mother of the earliest forebears—Tyre.

So she set out, guarded by youth,

    And its [beauty?]—blessed was Ghalwa!

    Phoenicia, with her towering glory,

    And her exalted, strengthened kingdom,

Princess of the arts and commerce,

And birthplace of the sciences and civilization,

Sultana of the seas and voyages,

    Queen of [purple?] and gold,

    Pearl of thrones and crowns,

And the aspiration of the Greeks and Romans,

    Stands like an abandoned ruin

Upon the waters of a shore in Tyre.
