لَقَدindeed بَلَغَتhas gone far بِهِمwith them الحِدَّهfury
فَمنso from أَيِّناwhich of us نَطلُبwe seek النَجدَهhelp
Fury has indeed carried them away.
They have reached the limit with them,
From which of us, then, are we to seek help?
So from whom shall we seek salvation?
أَلَستَare you not تَراهُمyou see them أُوليpossessors of غَضبَةٍrage
يَعيثونَthey wreak havoc بِالوَيلِwith misery فيin البَلدَهthe town
Do you not see them, possessed of rage,
Do you not see them full of rage
Wreaking misery in the town?
Spreading misery in the country?
فَكُلٌّso each يَرىhe sees نَفسَهُhimself سَيِّداًa master
وَكلٌّand each يَرىhe sees نَفسَهُhimself عُمدَهa mainstay
Each, then, sees himself as a master,
Each sees himself as master
And each sees himself as a mainstay.
And each sees himself as pillar

Whenever, in his ignorance, he sits cross-legged
When he sits arrogantly in his ignorance
Upon a seat, he fancies it a throne.
On a seat left empty for him

فَماso no فاضِلٌsurpassing سَيِّدٌa master عبدَهhis slave
Their noble man is like the base man among them;
The noble among them is like the wicked
So no master surpasses his slave.
So neither virtuous nor master is his servant

They have squandered sound judgment; what good is one
They lost integrity and he who
Who has squandered his sense in his fury?
Lost his sanity with his rebellion

They say: We are the pillar of the land,
They say we are pillars of the country
Yet they have made no provision for keeping faith.
Yet prepared no equipment for loyalty

As if the country needed
Of lies and of dire calamity.
Lies and pettiness

You see servants and palaces with him
Yet you see no honor in him.
Yet no honor do you see

Boasting vainly of his ancestors
As though mankind did not know his grandfather.
As if people don’t know his ancestors

He tries to hide his flaws
Within, but his prostration exposes him.
Exposed by prostration

Before defiling his cradle with him.

Does a monkey not birth a monkey?

Why do you remain asleep
And not be roused from that slumber?
And not wake from slumber?

When a reformer stands among you
All of you rise against him.
You all stand against him

So do not let the tyrant's fingernail
So allow not the tyrant’s rule
Scratch your Lebanon's skin.
To flay your skin

Shout for the return of what
Stolen—our moral character; give it back to us!
He stole of our morals, return it

Where, then, will you sleep, I wonder, after that?
Where will you sleep now?

And built a temple of deceit, so fell
Its builder's foundation; demolish it!
The foundations its builder laid

The robe you bestowed upon us has indeed grown threadbare,
An old garment you dressed us in
And we are drawn to newness.
Yet we yearn for new

For the age of obscurity has passed, and has been confronted
The era of ambiguity has passed
By our age, which breaks its covenant.
Ours annuls its era

Indeed, the time has come for light to bare an edge,
The time has come for light to set a limit
Just as the sword of darkness unsheathed its edge.
As the sword of darkness drew its limit

It has indeed nearly rusted in its sheath—
A sword lay rusting in its sheath
A keen sword that sees its sheath as its grave.
Seeing its sheath as its grave

For your thorn is a rose to it.
For to it your thorns are roses
