O phantom of tears, sorrows torment you.

Be easy on yourself, for we are all phantoms.

What do you hope for from tainted nectar

whose colors the goblets have embellished?

This existence is a coveted little garden,

where the apple indeed beguiled Adam.

This existence is gallows erected for us,

and oppression is the butcher in their squares.

And do you not see the peasant, after his toil,

meeting misery because he is a peasant?

So it is as though honoring the poor were forbidden,

and as though honoring the rich were permitted.

Those eyelids, having shed their tears—

does reform roam behind their curtains?

If shedding tears could reform a nation,

then in my nation there are tears and wailing.

In the tear of the wretched lies a hidden secret:

it is a dawn beyond the night of the oppressors.

Those buildings—their foundation will be demolished

by winds from the tempests of our lives.

Shed tears, for tears are nothing but the dew

of this life, and its fragrance wafts far.

Tears are but wine in humankind's cup,

and this wine will intoxicate the worlds.

O one who painted his thrones with the poor man's blood,

and whom we see sitting upon them, at ease:

these displays are skulls laid in rows,

within whose hollows the spirits rebel.

I saw you, O phantom of sorrow, weeping,

and in the world there is none but the liar.

    If you seek that jus-

tice, then go to your red hut.
