    Why do I see the heart blazing in your eyes?

    Has fire no cause, O sister of misery?

    Some hearts are fruits in which still lingers

    the fragrance of the gardens; but some are firewood.

    I recalled last night and trembled at its memory,

    while the night was drunk on what the clouds poured down.

    I recalled it, but doubt stirred within me:

    Indeed, it is no wonder when women dissemble.

    يَثورُ فيهِنَّ من أَعقابِها عَصبُ

    For their temperaments come from the serpent of Paradise;

    a sinew of its offspring stirs within them.

    At night I fear a phantom that flows over

    the waves of your eyes a while, then wanders away.

    A phantom of red lust, spun by

    red nights, with ruin in its depths.

    And your pale, alluring face—I am frightened

    by its colors, above which the flame lusts.

    You have kept ravishing the night in toil,

    until weariness congealed in your eyelids.

    And the darkness that appeared in your eye sockets

    is only remnants wrenched from the entrails.

    By your child, I have never gloated over a woman

    whose foot slipped, or whom gold deceived.

    وَالبُؤسُ أَعمى فَتَعيي ثمَّ تَنقَلِبُ

    For poverty betrays many a woman's dignity;

    and poverty is blind: she falters, then falls.

    نَقاوَتي وَالتُقى أُمٌّ لَها وَأَبُ

    I have a heart as pure as the tears of dawn;

    my purity and piety are its mother and father.

    How, then, could I steal the right that they have stolen,

    and how turn wolf out of baseness, as they did?

    I have memories that school me, as my morals do,

    so neither guile nor falsehood stirs within me.

    The past has left me Ghalwa's chastity,

    and a kinship with her spirit still runs in my blood.

    By your soul, Ghalwa, even if I am betrayed

    by the nights, and calamities silence my heart,

    if I am in a drunken stupor or in debauchery,

    and your phantom passes, purity and decency pass.

    And you, O mother of a child, in whose glances

    is chastity's longing, and in whose eyelids is play,

    أَما السَكارى فَهُم أَبناؤُهُ النُجُبُ

    pour the wines, for this age is an age of wine;

    as for the drunkards, they are its noble sons.

    Do not despair if you see the cup empty

    one day, for every year the grapes ripen.

    مَوج الشَبابِ عَلى رِجليكِ يَصطخبُ

    Pour the wines, and spare no hearts;

    the wave of youth roars at your feet.

    As for me, though yesterday I surrendered to

    the wine of nights, my heart remains undivided.

    وَأَقرَبُ الإِثمَ لكِن لَستُ أَرتَكِبُ

    I may drink wine, but I do not defile it;

    and I approach sin, but do not commit it.

    And tomorrow, when his youthful bloom lights up the child,

    and you grow old, and that wood remains,

    tell him: You came in the age of wines, so do not

    drink anything but wine, and grow pale as they grew pale.

    Tell him: These days are a farce,

    and victory belongs only to whoever gets drunk in them.

    Tell him: The chastity of bodies has departed

    with the chaste forefathers who have gone.

    Tell your child what you deem right tomorrow,

    for every matter has its sermons in due time.

    But today, pour the wine, and choose

    from pleasures what sins choose.

    وَالعَصر سَكران يا أَخت الشَقا تَعِبُ

    And fear no reproacher, for the reproacher has gone;

    and the age is drunk, O sister of misery, and weary.

    Its path is doubt, which masters it wherever it goes,

    and its dream is of red desires and intimacy.
