This life is like a hospital where sleep

The sick of existence, never cured of their disease.

As though the disease were hidden in their souls,

A secret whose unveiling defied physicians' knowledge.

One day I questioned my soul as she wept,

As though she had grown weary within my limbs.

O soul, if you are despairing in Lebanon,

Here is Damascus, cooing to us with sincere affection.

The rippling water in Barada is sweet,

As though it were pearls in a wide, dark eye.

And the weather there is mild, and clear

Is her sky, as she lies amid flowers and water.

But she did not answer me, and remained silent,

Casting glances and rapt attention toward my eyes.

As though within her lay a secret she was trying to

Hide, while the eye reveals it openly.

So I said: Here is Furuq; if you dwell there,

You will dwell, O soul, in a land for the strong.

Furuq is guarded by the Bosphorus, whose sight

Awakens ancestral glory in every breast.

When the Golden Horn contemplates its shore,

It beholds glory in the embrace of grandeur.

And the sun pours her lifeblood into the waters,

Smiling to reveal jewels in a virgin's mouth.

And here is Egypt, and the pyramids gaze at her

With Pharaoh's eye in place of a beauty's glances.

As though she, delighted by the Nile's roar,

Were an ardent lover of art amid poetry and the flute.

Still she did not answer me. Is my soul mute, or

    Was I brought a gray-haired, mute she-jinn?

So I said: O soul, if you desire repose—for all

The universe holds is rancor and enmity—

Let us dwell at the Pole, where the stars shine bright,

Enchanting souls with radiance and light.

There is no hatred there to terrify souls,

Nor the panting of enslaved people.

Then the soul called out in my breast, saying:

Wherever you dwell, you will surely find a way to please me,

Provided you turn away from a world overflowing

With rancors born of injustice and hatred.
