    In life's spring, sweet of character,

    kind in nature, boundless in hope.

    The image of divinity was almost

    complete in him, but for mortality's intrusion.

    يُطعِمُ اليَتمَ قَلبُه لا يبالي

    His heart is his Lord's heart when he offers hospitality;

    his heart feeds orphanhood, without a care.

    In its folds is tenderness for the poor,

    and longing for a marvel of beauty:

    لِ وَراءَ النَخيلِ فَوقَ الرِمالِ

    for a girl weeping on the bank of the Nile,

    behind the palms, upon the sands;

    هُ مَعاني العَذابِ وَالأَهوالِ

    for a virgin girl who would not have known, but for

    him, the meanings of torment and terror;

    for a girl he loved, and who loved

    him; so the two hearts lived for a few nights.

    In life's spring, disease gnaws at him,

    and disease has its allotted share among men.

    Silent, he questions visions in a bed

    that bears him onward toward his appointed end.

    فَإِذا المَوتُ مَنفَذٌ لِلكَمالِ

    He knew death before it sought him out;

    and behold, death was a passage to perfection.

    So he chose it as his intimate friend, and often

    he longed for it in nights gone by.

    Silent; yet whoever gazes upon him

    sees a glimmer of a vision.

    A thought appears through his eyes,

    which a glimmer of a vision has cloaked for him.

    O majesty of souls, you belong to immortality,

    even though you are in a worn-out sheath.
