Wound the heart, and give your poetry drink from it,

for the heart's blood is the wine of pens.

The source of truth in feeling is the heart,

and the heart is where inspiration alights.

And if you have not suffered, nor dipped

a pen in the depths of pain,

then your rhymes are ornament and glitter,

like bones in a marble tomb.

And if the heart is not softened by love,

the rancors of days turn it to stone.

And love cannot live without livers,

for love's nourishment comes from bodies.

Sacrifice the heart if you love, for

the heart is only a feast for passion.

What a feast love makes of a heart!

Its echo will endure among humankind.

And suffer as you will, for suffering is burnt offerings

that have risen from the altars of wombs.

Many a wound has become a spring of poetry

    where thirsty souls meet;

and many a sigh, when sanctified by the spirit, has become

    a strain of the holiest music;

and many a torment has breathed forth incense,

eternal in the censers of dreams.

    Worry and sorrow plucked blossoms

that grew along the banks of the spring of tears.

And misery gathered some rose thorns

that the east wind had bent over the spring.

And behold, love was weaving from them

for Shafiq, an aching heart's crown.

    And angels appeared to Shafiq

amid the folds of a white cloud,

and maidens came to it from heaven,

    pure as poets' tears,

    bearing jewels upon their breasts,

    like lamps kindled in heaven,

or clusters ripened by the suns of love

in the world of exalted imagination,

    where springtime never fades.

And crimson stairways appeared to him,

their hems hanging down in the ether.

Each stairway was strewn with roses,

and gossamer bands of silk bound them.

And on each rose were droplets

from which shone a feeling—I knew not what.

So the roses seemed goblets of love,

or glass flasks studded with tears,

and heaven had painted them the color of blood.

And throngs of maidens appeared to him

    upon those heavenly stairways,

playing for him the psalms of Jāwad

on the sacred lyre of love:

“Every night, O Lord, I flood with tears

my bed, because of that sin,

and the water of my eyes melts the bedding.”

They played, and the echo in the firmament

rose to the heights in reverence:

“In human hearts is corruption, and no truth

    وَحُلوقُ الوَرى قُبورٌ وَلَمّا

    is in their mouths, for evil is there;

and human throats are graves.” And when

the melody ceased and the psalm was ended,

the tormented lover heard a voice

whose echo the secluded chambers sent ringing on high:

“Suffering has cleansed you of every taint,

as have love within your aching heart

and your nights of thirst and hunger.

    فَاِحمَد نارَ السَماءِ وَمَجِّد

    Heaven's flame has sanctified your mortal mouth;

so praise heaven's fire and glorify it.

    فَغَمِّسهُ بِالدِماءِ وَخَلِّد

    And tears have sanctified your unhappy love;

so steep it in blood and make it immortal.

    أَيُّها البُلبُلُ الصَموتُ فَأَنشِد

    Then love drew poetry from your heart;

    O silent nightingale, sing!”

O conquerors, all of you upon the earth,

O drinkers of the cup of blood,

O you who gaze at the universe in scorn

    through deaf shells

and the blood of the weak and innocent,

you have known the glory of mighty thrones,

    وَعَشِقتُم من الجَمالِ نُجومَه

    and coated your crowns with frankincense;

and loved the stars of beauty,

    and donned purple mantles,

and toyed with time and crowns.

You tasted love in the displays of its beauty,

amid the dance of bodies and strings,

and violated even the sanctuary of its imagination,

since you were sated with lust for filth,

lust for clay in the cheeks of concubines.

And you conquered earth's realm with keen swords,

and grew drunk on the wine of victory,

and drank humanity's blood from skulls,

and abridged the pages of lifetimes

with a reed pen whose ink was fire.

You tasted wine in its varied cups,

and spat upon the wine-presser's hand.

You left the people nothing but their graves,

and to the wine-seller, thirst in the entrails,

and to some slave girls, the dregs of wine.

And you have known every place in glory

    وَعَرفتُم حَتّى الغُيوبَ وَلكِن

    and the utmost of its crimson pleasures;

and known even the unseen, yet

you have not known in glory the light of heaven,

    the goddesses' gift to poets.
