To your heart, my lord, I bring my complaint

of a heart that lies buried in my black fate.

I set it free as a child, and when it grew,

it came to need a guide.

Were you like this, when love held sway

in the days of youth's mighty rule,

following the birds' path through their meadow,

never belonging to anything but play?

And the meadow smiled with its flowers

at the rapture in your languid gaze,

showing you your hours alive with song,

    while tomorrow's fate concealed despair.

Felix, there is no rest for the free man

in a homeland that finds comfort in slaves.

Its daughters are enslaved within it,

preferring to be linked to a slave.

    Its daughters—alas for those dolls!—

have been stripped of their livers by oppression.

The world dissolved within their eyelids

the nectar of murky, corrupting ignorance.

And I loved a lovely maiden in folly,

while my youthful heart was not in my hands.

I loved in her what the dew loves

in the flitting of wandering breezes.

No sooner were the two hearts firmly bound than she went

casting my dreams into a furnace.

And the volcano erupted, until once more

the fire of despair crept through my bed.

So I feared my dignity would be destroyed,

and disgrace would run riot, unclothed.

So I told my heart: "Beware! I have

a glory that does not wear the robes of shame."

And a beautiful woman is a huntress,

ensnaring the heart of the proud, valiant man.

Tempestuous as a wave: if at play

are spirits within its folds, it swells.

When she saw me casting her pledge

upon the victims of her ashen love,

with despair entrenched within my eyes,

drawing no hopes from any spring,

she cast the splendors of her weary head

upon the remnants of my supple body,

as though she, with despair returning to her,

were casting torn limbs upon a boulder.

I barred my heart against love; what, then,

can passion hope for from my bolted heart?

Between my ribs lies a cold stone

that I flung into a colder darkness.

Five years have passed over us

    amid cruel, godless torment.

I reckoned them, so heavy were their burdens,

five generations within my dew-fresh breast.

What held me back from attaining my future

was sorrow; without sorrow I would not have stayed idle.

Woe to tender youth on account of its heart,

when they lead it astray and it finds no guidance.

The heart is a crime in a young man's life,

and the heart's maker is the transgressor.

It is the duty of the days to smash it

against the cradle's edge at birth.

    ذي حالَةُ الشاعِر يا سَيِّدي

    My lord Felix, this is my plight;

this is the poet's plight, my lord.

    Whenever love sees him draining

his tears, it tells him: "Sing!"

Wretched is my life in a land that has come

to favor the scoundrels among my enviers.

It prefers the owl's ill-omened voice

to the songs of the singing nightingale.

    ذوبتهُ شمعاً عَلى مَعبدي

    O poet of sorrows, this is my blood;

I have melted it as wax upon my shrine.

These are words of sorrow, inscribed

in tears from my ascetic eyelids.

    أَرفَعُها لِلرَجُلِ الأَوحَدِ

    This is my lament, O orator of the heights;

I raise it to the peerless man.

I raise it to glory at its zenith,

for it is the live ember of a thirsty heart.

I found within your soul what I did not find

    in quenched and slumbering souls.

I felt within its groans a revolt

that quenched the fire yet did not die out.
