    Can a free man live in Lebanon,

    while the life of the free is oppression?

    ةِ مَوطِني ما لي مَقَرُّ

    My patience with life has run out;

    my homeland—I have no abode.

    لُ مرقرقٌ لا يُستَقَرُّ

    Lebanon—its limpid water

    ripples, never still;

    لِلفَجرِ وَالآكامِ خضرُ

    and the meadow is green and smiling

    at dawn, and the hills are green;

    وَلَهُ من الأَزهارِ ثغرُ

    and the sea is its mirror,

    and it has a mouth of flowers;

    and from the towering mountains

    it has a soaring edifice.

    Lebanon, in its might, was

    a lion, with the generations for its claw.

    time, they shuddered in terror.

    and the ancients passed through it.

    Thus its sky is true revelation,

    and its soil is glory and pride.

    If its ancient might has left it,

    splendor and dignity have not left it.

    and never ceases to endure.

    And today it has been ravaged

    by calamities, and time has wronged it.

    هَل بَعدَ ذاكَ الطَيّ نشرُ

    And time has folded up its book;

    after that folding, will it be unfolded?

    They said, seeing my cheek

    streaming with my tears:

    'Leave for Egypt!' So I said within

    myself, in reply to them: 'God bless Egypt!'

    I shall depart from my homeland, for in

    my homeland are foxes, and they are many.

    And the cunning fox—never

    have his tricks and guile failed him.

    I still love it,

    for love of one's homeland is a vow.

    But I have an excuse for leaving:

    the grudges within it are excuse enough.
