أَوor كَصَدرٍlike a breast خَلاwas empty مِنof العَطفِtenderness حاقِدspiteful
One night, cold as the soil of the grave,
or like a spiteful breast emptied of tenderness,
عَرَّجَتshe turned aside غادَةٌa young woman مُلَثَّمَةُveiled الوَجthe face (first part)

a young woman, her face veiled, turned aside
to an out-of-the-way hotel in Zahle.
وَأَطَلَّتand she looked out تَرىto see المَدينَةِthe city فيin اللَيthe night (first part)
لِend of 'night' بِجِفنٍwith an eyelid ساهٍdistracted وَقَلبٍand a heart واجِدgrieving
And she looked out to see the city in the night,
with a distracted eye and a grieving heart.
فَإِذاthen behold زحلَةٌZahle كَمقلَةِlike the eye of ثَكلىa bereaved mother

Then behold: Zahle, like a bereaved mother's eye,
and behold, the river, its water still, unmoving.
فَأَحسَّتthen she felt بِرَعشَةٍwith a shudder عَقبتهاfollowed it

Then she felt a shudder, followed
by a stirring deep within her wandering mind.
وَأَمالَتand she turned عَنaway from المَدينَةِthe city وَجهاًa face
جَهَّمَتهhad made it grim أَشباحُthe specters of تِلكَthose المَشاهِدthe scenes
And away from the city she turned her face,
made grim by the specters of those scenes.

And the boy came to her, carrying a cup
of tea in the stillness.
نَظرَتshe looked نَظرَةًa glance إِلَيهِat him بِجِفنٍwith an eyelid
هوَit لِلسَهدِfor sleeplessness وَالشُجونand sorrows مَوارِدwatering places
She cast a glance at him with an eye
that was a watering place for sleeplessness and sorrows.
ثُمَّthen قالَتshe said كَيفَhow المَريضthe sick man وَأَدنَتand she brought near

Then she said, “How is the sick man?” and brought
her lifeless mouth close to the cup's rim.

Then the young man answered with some misgiving,
while the willows' rustling slumbered in the river:
رحمَmay he have mercy اللَهُGod منthe one whom تُسَمّينَyou name أَمسىhas become
القَبرُthe grave مَأواهُhis home مِنذُfor يَومٍa day واحِدone
“May God have mercy on the one you name—
the grave has been his home for a single day.”

جَمدتshe froze جمدَةthe rigidity of الدُمىstatues فيin المَساجِدplaces of worship
He had scarcely uttered the words when
she froze with the stillness of statues in places of worship.
وَاِرتَمَتand she collapsed لاnot تَفيقُshe comes to منfrom شِدَّةِthe intensity of اليَأسِdespair

And she collapsed, not coming to, so deep was her despair;
so the boy grew afraid—and despair is ungrateful.
أَيُّهاO اللَيلُnight ماnot ظَلَمتَyou wronged قُلوباًhearts
لَوif عَرَفتyou knew القُلوبَhearts ماذاwhat تُكابِدthey endure
O night, you would not have wronged hearts
had you known what hearts endure.
