    O my homeland!

    Here is my heart, weeping

Over my ruins, in its longing, and calling:

    O my homeland!

If only you could see the tears from it,

    Flowing through my breast like a stream;

    My eyes fill with them,

And my pale cheeks fill with them.

    So draw love from it,

For my tears spring from my love,

    O my homeland!

    If I find love cruel,

    أَو أَرَ الذلَّ اِنتِشاراً

    I find only my heart under its tyranny;

    Or see humiliation spreading,

I find only my homeland beneath its veil.

    Bow your head until

    It is raised through struggle,

    O my homeland!

Wherever I go, I see people

Always scoffing at the mention of you.

For they are of you, and yet

They disowned you—and people are an ungrateful folk.

And they, the sons, have sold

The mother in the auction market.

    O my homeland!

    Tell us of forefathers

Whose soil the cedars have shaded since ancient times,

    And of the rulers when

They ruled within you by an ancient law.

    Teach today the judges

Of justice to treat the people fairly,

    O my homeland!

O my homeland, if I am called

By my lineage—the dust in those graves—

And the fire of my passion goes out,

And my oil grows dim in the lamp of existence,

Do not count me as ashes,

For my passion is in my ashes,

    O my homeland!
