The plane-tree brides upon the shore—

Sleep is dissolved within their eyes—

    Calm as the calm river,

Dream in the green of their leaves.

And the spreading tree on the peaceful hill

Is silent—what, I wonder, does it conceal?

    Still in the still hour,

Like an old woman dreaming of her past.

No sound from the blackbird among the leaves,

And the chattering nightingale does not sing.

And the wind has tired of sleeplessness in the fields,

So it lies asleep upon their grass.

I hear in the valley the ringing of the bell,

Dissolving God's spirit within the weary.

So my soul bows, and breath listens,

And love is cleansed, and longing grows pure.
