    أَنتَ لِلنّاسِ أَجمَعين

    Not for one people, nor one faith;

    لِلذَراريِّ بَعدَ حين

    You are for this generation—indeed,

    for descendants in time to come;

    لِلبُناةِ المُشَيَّدين

    for the tyrants laid low,

    for the builders raised high,

    لِلعَبيدِ المُتَوَّجين

    for the dethroned kings,

    for the crowned slaves,

    خَدَّروا الأَسدَ في العَرين

    for the outcasts, for those

    who drugged the lion in its den;

    لِلأُباةِ المُستَعبَدين

    for the fornicators in power,

    for the proud spirits enslaved.

You are for thorns, for roses,

    for prophets in chains,

    for Buddhists, for Jews,

    for Christians, for Muslims.

A sanctuary of revelation: love colored

    the images within its Eden.

    And upon every image

is a nurse to heart and eye.

    Images veiled in visions,

    and unveiled through thoughts;

so I seem to see them brought down—

    a relic from Abqar.

O you, proud of poetry's sigh

    and love upon the string,

    whose heart mocks outward finery,

    striking at the other idols:

art became an ascetic when you accepted

it within you, and there it was confined.

    O faithful guardian

of the temple of lucid speech,

    O prince of the wanderers,

brothers of the sun and moon!

in its passion or its blood,

    nor spring's morning, smiling

to reveal the ivory of its smiling mouth,

    nor the lovesick evening, listening

to the whispers of its stars,

nor the innocent daisies, breathing out

    the dreams of their buds,

    can match the magic dissolved

by Shawqi's spirit with his pen.

    Neither love in its suffering,

    nor darkness in its scowl,

    nor heaven in its vengeance,

    nor flame in its blazing,

    nor the innocent's cry in

    a surge of his grievance,

    nor al-Ma'arri, against humankind

    rebelling in his mockery,

    can match Shawqi, stirred

by a fit of rage from his hell.

What blame lies on light and flame,

and on the flowers upon the hills,

if they come to the Arabs' poet

    wailing at his funeral?

    Nightingale of earth and heaven,

    spreading light through both,

O brother of the destitute, never

    were you destitute among men.

    You tasted misery only

    in a heart that suffered,

in souls that complained of injustice,

and a feeling that voiced its grievance.

    You lived, like light, inspired,

    and, like Abbas, glutted.

You did not pay the laurel's price

    in tears or blood.

    Ah, Shawqi! For Hafiz

    was more wretched, and greater.

    He drew inspiration from misery,

while you drew inspiration from idols.

    You would fall asleep lovesick,

    while he fell asleep orphaned.

his throne was poetry and wood.

Ah, in the realm of letters,

    what kings you two were!

You lived in exile just as

    bubbles lived in wine:

    an exile loftier than majesty

    and sweeter than rapture.

You lived there like a nightingale

that passed through the feast and hid,

    bearing from its wing

    fortune's tremor in its down.

I do not forget you, roaming

    amid rubies and gold,

    through the Alhambra's palaces, bidding

    glory speak among the ruins.

You questioned art, head held high,

    about the family of the Arabs;

    so I see, from Umayya,

a shadow of kinship in you.

You did not pay the laurel's price

    in tears or toil.

    Ah, Shawqi! For Hafiz

    was dearer in his misery.

    He would fall asleep orphaned,

    while you fell asleep lovesick.

    What kings you two were,

yesterday, in the realm of letters!
