Between those hills and those roses,

Upon the pebbles of an azure shore,

Beneath a horizon like a cheek or damask steel,

Smooth, perfumed by a breath of laurel,

Fragrance spread sweetly through the air.

    Dawud would always return,

    فَإِذا مالَتِ الغُصونُ تَنهَّد

    And prepare a seat upon a rock;

When the branches swayed, he sighed,

And his sorrow lifted from him and dispersed,

And he forgot the distant days of misery.

He was sweet of speech, gentle of disposition,

    A poet attentive to every anguish;

If he saw tears wept for some cause,

He shed tears from the eyes of his reed pen,

    Portraying life's scene as sorrowful.

    Whenever he sat contemplating

The watercourses with their cascading clear water,

    How they flow without slowing,

Then pour down, stream after stream,

Among the roses of the hills, which grow dewy,

Two women would pass before him,

Silent as the marble of graves,

Looking at spring for a few moments,

    Then disappearing behind the thickets,

Like two phantoms of Suad and Mayya.

    A middle-aged woman nearing fifty,

And a girl not yet twenty,

    Who carried a hidden disease within her ribs;

At times she forgets her pains, and at times

She sees death nearby, making ready.

Her eyes were no longer her eyes,

    For they lay dead within her eyelids;

And her hands, in sickness, were not her hands.

O tuberculosis, why have you wronged her?

Will you not pity her youthful heart?

After a month that seemed a year,

In which sorrows wove their mantle,

Dawud wished there might be greetings,

And smiles between them, and words,

And talk about the girl; so he greeted them.

He learned afterward that her father

Had died of the same disease, and her brother too.

He wept, mourning the beauty of her youth,

And a farewell smile upon her dusky lips,

And youth dying little by little.

Her mother, the most bereaved of mothers,

After those scenes of the past,

    Could not, with smiles,

    فَاِبتِسامُ الحَزينِ كانَ عَصيّا

    Restrain a consumptive girl from sorrowful sighs;

For a grieving person's smile was hard to summon.

Often the memories of those scenes

Returned to her while the night was drunken and sleepless:

The day she wept before the pillows,

Where the son died after the father,

Leaving behind the dreadful hidden disease.

"My Lord," she said, "O Lord of this existence,

And hope of the miserable and ill-fated,

Enough for me, in my misery and struggles,

Was the death of my young husband and my only son.

So heal my daughter, and be compassionate toward me."

Endowed with beauty like an April dawn,

Touched by the fingers of sorrow,

And whiteness like the snow in Lebanon,

And speech that melts into the ears

    A musical melody of life.

Her eyes were the emblem of an aching heart,

And her dusky lips borrowed the color of candles.

Such was Hind, a daughter of tears,

    إِنَّ قَلبَ الرَبيعِ كانَ عَتِيّا

    As her youth appeared in spring;

    Indeed, spring's heart was cruel.

One day, as sunset drew near,

Hind sat with a book in her hands.

    فَمَضى فيهِ جِفنُها المُرتابُ

    She read awhile, and the mist came;

Her uneasy eyelid wandered through it,

    Now absent-minded, now weeping.

Hind, why do you gaze at the mist

With eyes that have melted and a heart that has melted?

Are these visions showing you youth

Fading away and turning to dust

Before it reaches life in its strength?

Dawud came to Hind after appearing,

And saw her and her mother among the flowers.

In her hands was a piece of silk,

    Some of which she had embroidered with expert skill;

Art appeared alive in Hind's hands.

He said, with a slight smile, "Who is this for?

It resembles a hooded cloak for a boy."

She answered with a sigh of pain,

    فَهَنيئاً لَها الزَواج هَنيّا

    "For a girl who married a year ago;

May her marriage be happy—happy indeed."

He came to her in the morning and saw her,

With a book trembling in her right hand.

Her eye was giving its attention

    To a page whose meaning he wished he could grasp;

The girl had lingered over it a long while.

He went slowly behind her back,

And saw her reciting with anguish and sorrow

A verse that had been spoken a century earlier

By a poet: "Father, do not let me die

    Before I know chaste love."

Hind saw, as she thought of tomorrow,

Through her dreams, a black grave.

A maiden lay within it; never had sighed

Her breast in life, until it rested on

    Soil enfolding the pitch-black darkness.

The bride of the grave appeared to her,

    Bending over her yellowed face,

With bouquets of roses and flowers in her hands,

Scattered over her head and breast,

    Giving off their sweet fragrance.

And the maiden girls appeared to her,

    Dancing, drunken with their love,

Vying with one another as youth vied,

With beauty that stirred the strings

In the hands of a handsome-faced musician.

And a young man gazing tenderly at her,

Alarmed by the sickness in both her cheeks,

Fearful of blood upon her lips,

Vomited by what had ravaged her lungs,

And a cough through which death retched.

A frightening phantom appeared to her,

Wandering between the lashes of her eyes,

    مُثَّلَت دَورَها عَلَيها الصُروفُ

    With torches and curtains in its hands;

Upon them, life's reversals enacted their part,

And death appeared openly before her.

She awoke at a violent shudder

    فَتَلاشَت كَالحُلمِ رُؤيا الطُيوفِ

    That fear sent creeping through her frail youth;

The vision of phantoms dissolved like a dream,

    And vanished before flowing tears:

A Babylonian spell within her eyes.

"My Lord," she said, "Did You not give me desires,

And sweet speech, and a beautiful face?

Why, then, do I find youth so miserly,

That it never sees my cheeks without turning away

From a beauty melting in my cheeks?

O my God, shall I not one day meet

A lover among the company of lovers,

With pity in my yearning heart,

Other than tears roaming my eye corners,

And anguish shining in my eyes?"

O daughter of disease, O daughter of graves,

O phantom walking in a dungeon,

    إِنَّ رَسمَ الآلامِ وَالأَوجاسِ

    Conserve your breaths as much as you can;

The traces of pains and fears

    Will soon be quietly erased.

You did not know how, little by little,

Death gnaws at your angelic body.

O angel whom time led astray into error,

In an age that was never faithful,

Live on within us, and do not be forgotten.

You will go to the realms of eternity,

    After those sicknesses and diseases,

    Pure as white lilies,

Carrying the torch of grief and weeping

In a heart that lived its life unsullied.

You will swoon in this existence,

Before long, as the spirit of roses swoons,

Leaving in the heart of every loving soul

Who saw the yellowing of your cheeks

    Memories translucent as wine.

Dawud said one day to himself,

As his thought clarified his obscure lesson:

"What virtue does a young man leave after his burial,

If he refuses mercy to the unfortunate in his misery,

And generous compassion toward the afflicted?

Nothing is purer than the flower of kindness

Upon the breast of the selfless struggler.

If I become the husband of sorrow's maiden,

Is not one human being there for another?

Would I not have been faithful in life?

    هكَذا قَد أَرادَتِ التَضحِياتُ

    That girl will live through love;

    Thus have sacrifices willed.

Then let death shine between her eyes:

For deaths are trifles before love.

Let her taste that love, abundant as Kawthar."

    The deeply patient poet went,

Laying his purpose before the girl's mother,

Saying, "My heart and my life,

And my striving and all my wishes,

Desire a comfortable life for Hind.

    لَيسَ داءُ الفَتاةِ داءً عضالا

    Hind will live for long years;

The girl's disease is not incurable.

Trust me, and revive your hopes.

I am wealthy; I do not seek money,

But sweet beauty and a proud, noble character.

    She will recover from her disease after a year;

We will live in happiness and peace.

Trust that Hind, afflicted with sickness,

Will see me, as the days pass, as a brother,

Not a savage lover of her body."

Her mother wept at these words,

    With eyes radiant with dreams;

When she became certain of his sincere intent,

She thanked him with a smiling, tearful eye

That had been fit for sorrow and lamentation.

"Hind, I love you; I love a beauty—

Love shoots arrows from your dusky lips."

He said this, having seen hopes

Drawing within her eyes an image

Pure and angelic in its beauty.

She answered, after silence had overtaken her

For a little while, as though it were Harut:

"How can you love? Do you not see I am spent?

My eye is going out, and my heart is dying,

And dust wanders through my cheeks."

He said, "No, you will live a joyful lifetime,

And find life rich and flourishing.

I am sensible; I asked the physician.

He told me, 'Hind will recover soon,

And see the rosy color of her cheek.'"

Two weeks passed for the lovers,

During which they prepared the wedding trousseau.

    And beautiful spring in April

    Gloried in jasmine and basil,

    Pouring out that pearly dew.

    With embroidered, openwork silk,

And patterned ornament upon the windows,

Thus the chamber of the darkest wedding

    Appeared, preparing for a funeral,

Adorned with the beauty of the dreadful nuptials.

    أُلقِيَت فَوقَه سُتورُ الحَريرِ

    And a small bed had been prepared within it;

Silken curtains were laid over it.

The fingers of the pure breeze played

Among the folds of its outspread drapery,

And the drapery fluttered, unfolding and folding.

    Here, after her royal wedding,

Hind appeared like the radiant morning,

With purity like every unsullied heart,

And whiteness like her lily-white gown,

And a grace breathing purity and fragrance.

    What ails that black butterfly,

    Singing in the white room?

Her wing is pitch-black, like hope cut off,

    And her dreadful song is the emblem of weeping;

The afflicted man took it for a plaintive song.

One day, as darkness drew near,

    Pains throbbed within her ribs.

    She collapsed, as death appeared,

    Flooding her eye, sleepless,

Turning toward the realm of eternal darkness.

She awoke before the dreadful death,

And saw her husband deeply pale.

"My beloved," she said to him, "my beloved,

My death is here; the time of my departure has come,

For my torment rages in my lungs.

Yet I go to the home of eternity

    فَأَنا رُغمَ عِلَّتي وَبَلائي

    With joy, happiness, and serenity;

For despite my illness and affliction,

I have tasted love like other women,

    And known golden togetherness."

Her head fell as her hands had fallen,

And the gasping faded from her lips.

She appeared, with blood upon her lips,

Like a white ewe upon which was cast

    A cruel-hearted man's bloody arrow.

What sin had that young girl committed,

For her youth to be punished with death?

    Lord, if that victim's origin

Was a father who bequeathed the hidden poisons,

Her youth had done no monstrous deed.

Lord, why do You wrong the innocent,

And increase the misery of the suffering, unfortunate soul?

    فَاِحتَرَم فيهِ حكمَةً عَلياءَ

    They say, "Thus God has willed;

So honor in it an exalted wisdom,

And offer Him thanks morning and evening."
