الشاعِرانِthe two poets تَبارَكَblessed be الغَزِلانthe two lovers
طَرفيmy gaze وَطَرفُكِand your gaze حينَwhen يَلتَقِيانِthey meet
The two poets—blessed be the two lovers—
are my gaze and yours when they meet.
عَينايَmy two eyes فيin عَينَيكِyour two eyes أَشعُرُmost poetic ماwhat يَرىsees
قَلبيmy heart وَأَنقىand the purest ماwhat يُذيبُmelts حَنانيmy tenderness
My eyes in yours are the most poetic thing beheld
by my heart, and the purest thing that melts my tenderness.
ياO خَيرَbest of مَنthose whom حَنَّتyearned إِلَيهاfor her مُهجَةٌa soul
وَأَحبَّand dearest of مَنthose whom غَزَلَتsang of love لَهاto her عَينانِtwo eyes
O best of those for whom a soul has yearned,
and dearest of those to whom two eyes have sung of love!
اللَهَGod! مِنof قُبَلٍkisses طَرَفتُI regaled بِهاwith them دَميmy blood
قوتاًas sustenance وَلمand did not تَدنَسbecome sullied بِهاby them الشَفَتانِthe two lips
God, what kisses I offered my blood
as sustenance, yet neither lip was sullied by them!
أَرسلتُI sent forth فيكِabout you الشعرpoetry عَفوspontaneously سَليقَتيmy natural gift
وَالفَنُّand art أَخلَصُهits purest منfrom الوُجدانِfeeling
I poured forth verse about you, as my nature freely prompted;
and art, at its purest, springs from feeling.
لَمdid not أَغتَصِبI seize by force حِبَرَthe finery الكَلامِof speech وَإِنَّماbut rather
عَينايَmy two eyes مِنfrom عَينَيكِyour two eyes تَغتَرِقانِdrink their fill
I did not wrest the finery of speech; rather,
my eyes drink their fill from yours.
أَتَلومُنيdo they blame me? حِطَمُthe wrecks النِساءِof women فَإِنَّنيfor indeed I
خَلَلَamid المَلامِreproach نَشَقتُI inhaled عرفَthe scent of زَوانيharlots
Do those wrecks of women blame me? For I,
amid their reproach, inhaled the scent of harlots,
وَرَأَيتُand I saw أَشواقاًlongings تودُّwish لَوif only أَنَّهاthat they were
ريحٌa wind يَمُرُّpasses عَبيرُهاits fragrance بِبَيانيthrough my words
and saw longings wishing they were
a wind whose fragrance would pass through my words.
