لَقَدindeed مَرَّpassed بيby me أَمسِyesterday بِالصُدفَةِby chance
فَتاةٌa maiden لَهاshe has الحُسنُbeauty فيin الوُجنَةِthe cheek
Indeed, yesterday, by chance, there passed by me
A maiden with beauty in her cheek.
فَلَمand did not تَتَرَدَّدhesitate بِأَنin that قَطَفَتنيshe plucked me
فَشَعَّتso shone عَلىupon شعرِهاher hair نِجمَتيmy star
And she did not hesitate to pluck me,
So my star shone upon her hair.
وَلمand had not يَمضِpassed يَومانِtwo days حَتّىuntil ذَبلتُI withered
فَأُسقِطتُso I was dropped صَفراءَyellow كَالميتَةِlike one dead
And not two days had passed before I withered,
So I was dropped, yellow, as though dead.
وَصِرتُand I became أُداسُI am trampled بِاَقدامِهاby her feet
إِلىuntil أَنthat رَمَتنيshe threw me مِنfrom الشُرفَةِthe balcony
And I came to be trampled beneath her feet,
Until she threw me from the balcony.
وَفيand in الصُبحِthe morning أَبصَرَنيhe saw me عابِرٌa passerby
وَقدand had شَمَّsmelled بيin me أَرَجَthe fragrance of النَكهَةِthe scent
And in the morning a passerby saw me,
And had caught my fragrant scent.
فَحَنَّso he took pity عَلَيَّon me وَقَرَّبَand brought close مِنّيto me
عُيونَeyes التَساؤُلِquestioning عَنabout حالَتيmy condition
Then he took pity on me and brought near me
Eyes questioning my condition.
وَقدand had لَمَّنيhe gathered me up بِخُشوعٍreverently وَقالand said
تَعالَيcome أُرَوِّكِlet me water you مِنfrom دَمعَتيmy tear
And he gathered me up reverently and said:
Come, let me water you with my tear.
تَعاليcome فَإِنَّكfor you are رَمزٌa symbol لِقَلبيof my heart
وَرَمزٌand a symbol لِعمريَof my life فيin شَقوَتيmy misery
Come, for you are a symbol of my heart,
And a symbol of my life in my misery.
يعفِّرُكِcovers you with dust الناسُpeople تَحتَbeneath النِعالِthe sandals
وَأَنتِyet you تجودينَyou give generously بِالنَفحَةِwith fragrance
People soil you with dust beneath their sandals,
Yet you give freely of your fragrance.
فَكُلُّso all الَّذينَthose who أَساؤواthey did wrong إِلَيكِto you
أَجدتِyou bestowed generously عَلَيهِمِupon them بِالرَحمَةwith mercy
Thus, all those who wronged you—
You lavished mercy upon them.
تَعالَيcome فَبُستانُكِfor your garden الصَدرthe breast
وَالقَلبُand the heart يروّيكِwaters you مِنfrom منهلِthe wellspring of المُهجَةِthe lifeblood
Come, for your garden is the breast,
And the heart will water you from the wellspring of lifeblood.
