And scarcely had news spread through the chambers of flame—

bewildering the blaze and prompting Saqar to question—

that mortals had indeed loosed a wind toward Saqar,

leading into the fire a people humankind had condemned,

when a band of specters appeared

in a howdah, beneath which sparks leapt.

Vacant-eyed and huge, whenever they ventured deeper

into a passage among flame's catacombs, they shrank.

A red owl drags them; in her hand

is an axe, with depravity depicted on both its sides.

Then the fury of all the inhabitants of the fire flared,

and throngs were mustered, throng following throng.

They poured from the tunnels of hell into

Iblis's hall, where the jinn had grown drunk.

    يَفحُّ في شَفَتَيهِ حَيَّةٌ ذكرُ

    And in the specters' procession was one full of vain pride;

a male serpent hisses between his lips.

Upon him is a bereaved, disjointed lyre,

and a broken scepter made of dreams.

He casts phantoms upon the chambers of fire

from his deep-crimson robe, so they flare up.

Then scarcely had he listened to the melodies played

by a band of jinn when numbness touched him.

And he cried, “What is this vision, and where am I?”

Then Iblis said, “Easy now; this is Saqar.

You carried on earth a lying lyre,

not one of whose strings throbbed with truth,

and a quill from an owl's wing that drew nothing

    but bats hiding in brocade.

So you are mine, and my hell is mine; I apportion it

to those who recited poetry but felt nothing.”

And in the specters' procession was one full of haughtiness,

with fissures in his palm and filth in his eye.

    مِن الفَضيلَة لَم يَعلق بِها أَثرُ

    He drags the train of misshapen laws;

no trace of virtue has clung to them.

Then Iblis said, “Bow your head, for one who has debased

his hands on earth cannot lift his gaze.

So you are mine, and my hell is mine; I apportion it

to those who swore oaths to the people and made false claims.”

And in the specters' procession was one full of folly,

foaming and frothing, sparing nothing and leaving nothing.

In his eyes are ash-covered volcanoes,

and on his brow God's image is driven back.

Then Iblis said, “Desist! Not wrathful were

the verses and suras in the messengers' speech.

So you are mine, and my hell is mine; I apportion it

to those who punished only to avenge themselves.”

And wine was foaming in its taverns,

and the jinn played music, and the fires erupted,

when suddenly a voice from the earth that had pardoned

says to the fire, “The people of earth have forgiven.”
