And morning spread over the hills

    with translucent threads of mist.

And the whiteness of the snow, beneath the light of

dawn, builds hillocks among the vineyards.

And the monks looked out from the balcony of the

monastery, the solace of souls amid hardships.

And they saw a black speck upon the grave,

like a vision appearing behind the clouds.

A voice said, 'This is a bride from among the

jinn, visiting the tomb to inspire terror.'

A second said, 'No, rather, this is the spirit of one dead,

calling to God for help under torment.'

And a third went on to say, 'It is

the symbol of the all-conquering Day of Judgment.'

And finally they went to the grave, so that

they might be reassured about the astonishing sight.

And they saw a body with disheveled

hair, murmuring, her gaze lowered to the dust.

Sickness and sorrow had left nothing of her

but a vision of what remained of youth.

What befell the girl after her beloved,

O Love, O offspring of ruin?

What befell the girl? Where is she

today? Answer me, O bringer of afflictions.

Has the one who enfolded her beloved enfolded her?

Or do you think she returned to that youthful dalliance?

Live long, and sacrifice whatever you wish, O

Love, until a day of reckoning turns you back.
