And a handsome man I took as a companion,

Despite the efforts of the faultfinder and reproacher.

He is a thief I lodged in my heart,

Though I knew him to be a robber.

His face is a temple for virgins,

And a chapel; his hair is a monk.

Beauty wrote a verse about him—

    God bless that writer.

God perfected His art in him,

And excelled in shaping the eyebrow.

So I fancy that, when He had finished him,

The Maker of creation lost the mold.
