    ما أَضعَفَ السَيفَ حينَ الخُلُقُ يُمتَشَقُ

    These marvels are virtue born of that blaze;

    How feeble the sword when virtue is unsheathed!

    كِلاهُما في لَهيبِ الحَقِّ يَحتَرِقُ

    No victor is found in iron or in fire;

    Both burn in the blaze of truth.

    حَذارِ في ظُلمِهِ أَن يَبرُقَ الحَدَقُ

    God is greater, in thought, than flames;

    Beware, in oppressing it, lest eyes flash.

    If conscience falters in restraining an evil deed,

    Then bear it patiently, for there are ink and paper.

    Were a sage consulted, there would be no deceit,

    Nor would there be a tyrant if the depths were plumbed.

    O pathways of the red idea, how did it grow

    Upon your soil into youth—that stock?

    Twenty-seven years: literature suffered no bereavement there,

    Nor did recklessness overshadow her young men.

    Youth marched there at conscience's bidding, so none

    Was an aggressor in peace or a mercenary in war.

    فَكَيفَ يَسلَمُ مَن في عِرقِهِ رَنَقُ

    This youth has the milk of truth in his blood;

    How, then, can one with taint in his veins survive?

    ثَديُّها الحُمرُ في عَينَيهِ تَندَلِقُ

    The great revolution never ceased to woo him;

    Her red breasts spill into his eyes.

    He went forth to glory; no equal to him had been seen,

    Nor had paths like his been blazed for any mortal.

    In every maiden's cry, hope flowed,

    And at each soldier's leap, divisions marched.

    A heroism whose splendor bewildered the world—

    Is it intoxication amid the flames, or lust?

    فَلَو أَقامَ بِأَحلاقِ الرَدى مَرَقوا

    They are the outcasts; the farthest reaches of the impossible are theirs;

    Even if it lodged in death's throats, they would dart through.

    On every outcast's brow, a king appeared,

    And in every wish of his, a twilight glow appeared.

    فَاِنفُض تُرابَكَ يَكفي ذلِكَ الغَرَقُ

    Lenin, your radiant dreams have come true;

    So shake off your dust; enough of that drowning!

    Nothing remains of the world's law but a flicker of life,

    And the reclaimers still have a flicker of life left.

    Blessed are you, O awakening in revolt for the people!

    These marvels are the fragrance of her faith.

    الأَقوِياءُ مَضَوا وَالمُؤمِنونَ بَقوا

    Indeed, survival rests upon faith;

    The mighty have passed away; the believers have remained.
