Sleep, sleep, for anything other than slumber

is no delight to children's eyes.

In the cradle, you are like a dawn flower,

revived by the hand of dew in the valley.

    O Suad, these maidens' eyes

    are all smiling upon Suad,

pouring light into your heart's purity

from the lamp of souls and hearts.

Sleep and dream, for your dream is sweet,

    O Suad, like cool Salsabil.

And let your tender mother croon

to you with pure longing and song.

O angel, in the cradle you are no human being

like one who has reached maturity.

In your bed you are still a spirit

that a hand has fettered with the bonds of lifeless matter.

You do not know humankind, and yet

heaven has cast you among humankind.

Did you commit a sin up there, and so were punished

with exile in a world of oppression?

O Suad, tomorrow we shall see you a young woman,

    pouring love into every heart.

And youth will pour into the cup of your eyelids

the nectar of beauty for those who come to drink.

So beware then, keeping watch over the cup,

for life's eye lies in wait.

Do not plunge into love, for it is nothing but

the impulses of souls in bodies.

O Suad, tomorrow you will see figures,

    intoxicating, sold at auction,

    and beautiful eyes into which

filth's vermin breathe the kohl of corruption.

Guard, guard the purity of this

    bough, childhood's swaying bough.

And let it grow, for within it are fruits,

wholesome, for every thirsty one's [unclear word].

Only the fruits of purity live on

from childhood's cradles until the Day of Calling.

And when evening passes over them,

they are scattered upon the graves.

Sleep, O Suad, for sleep is sweet

to a heart that has never tasted sleeplessness.

And smile, for life smiles in the cradle,

and peace slumbers beneath the pillow.
