O sweetest of all that eyes behold,

    sweet as this gathered fruit,

    enchantment bestows upon you

    dominion over death.

The heavens have showered upon you

    from their magic all that

    surpasses mortal beauty.

    Humankind, O my inspiration,

is a book, and you are its surahs.

    O my inspiration,

O finest presence in my blood,

    without you imagination would die,

    and even beauty would die

    upon my lips.

    From your name wafts

    the fragrance of your body,

yet humankind does not smell it.

Humankind, O you who intoxicate me,

is grass, while you are the blossom.

    O you who intoxicate me,

    تَعالَ نَمضي فَهَل

    send your tender love far away;

come, let us go—for is there

    among people anything but clamor?

    For people are either fools

    or frivolous liars.

My sustenance rests upon your lips,

and the light is in your eyes,

    while humankind never awakens.

    For humankind, O my guide,

is night, while you are the moon.

    The forest is our protector

    when it calls to us.

    Its lights remain

    drunken within us.

    Love and hope are ours,

and poetry is wine and sustenance.

    O Love, everything dies

    except our nights.

    Among lovers, we are not

after the manner of those of old.

O finest one in all the chronicles,

    humankind is water and clay,

but you are the soul of humankind.
