    O smooth-cheeked one of lewdness, your fire is in my blood.

    So blaze as much as you wish to blaze.

    I do not fear a firebrand from Hell,

    as long as my body, O Sodom, is my hell.

    فَحَمَلتُ تابوتي وَسِرتُ بِمَأتَمي

    You led me, dead, through the corridors of flame;

    so I carried my coffin and walked in my funeral procession.

    فَرَفَعتُها في عَصريَ المُتَهكّمِ

    And you bound my brow with ember-hot lust;

    so I raised it in my mocking age.

    You taught me the language of prophecy when

    you detonated the mines of poison in my mine.

    فَلظاكِ في جِسمي وَثَأركِ في فَمي

    Easy now: we are both armed, O Salum;

    for your blaze is in my body, and your vengeance is in my mouth.

    You sent my heart through farces as a poet,

    and sprinkled the powder of admonitions through my pen.

    So it was as though your prophets' wrath, when

    burned, lived on in the speaking flame.

    O harlot of this age, ladle out your wine,

    and give drink to humankind's children, and surrender.

    And sleep for a time in the bed of strangers,

    then turn from it to another, and fling yourself down.

    حَتّى يَجِفَّ بِك الرضاع وَتَهرَمي

    And sing as much as you wish in the black mire of decay,

    until your nursing milk runs dry and you grow old;

    وَيَصيرَ حُسنُكِ مخدِعاً لِلأَرقَمِ

    until the vipers lie with you in the darkness,

    and your beauty becomes a bedchamber for the speckled serpent;

    يِمتَصُّ جيفَة عرضِك المُتَهَضِّمِ

    until worms boil out of you and curl back

    to suck the carrion of your degraded honor;

    until death creeps through you, and blotted out are

    the offspring of the sinful, criminal cradle.
