That bird—why has a daze overtaken it?

    It neither stirs nor chants.

    حِ فَماذا لِلصُّبحِ كانَ يَقولُ

    It used to utter something within dawn's hearing;

what, then, was it saying to dawn?

O bird, in your glances there is a glow

from my beloved, and bewilderment and withering.

You meant to do something, then my face alarmed you.

Do you think there is a way for me to my beloved?

    With a glance from him, I see—will

his lowered curtain part to reveal it?

O messenger of the beloved, is there for my beloved

after long separation any messenger but you?

O messenger of the beloved, how is my beloved?

Is what the reproacher claims true?

O messenger of the beloved, tell my beloved

that I, like him, am a sick prisoner.

Return to him and tell him that my heart

is like my face, and that my night is long.

If only my feathers could fly like you, O bird,

and my gaze—if only it went unrecognized!

Then I could see him, with no eyes seeing me,

and he could see me, with no intruder telling tales.

O messenger of the beloved, O happiest of creatures,

linger, for you are a small part of him.

In you is a tremor from him, and on your feathers

a moist shadow from his eyes.

And longing is clasped upon your wings,

and passion drawn from his heart.

O messenger of the beloved, when night descends

and the kohl dissolves among the hills,

and the valley clouds over, and in the distance gasps

the dissolved outline of the groves,

and eyes sleep in Layla's house,

save one eye a handkerchief visits now and then,

tell Layla: I saw him; he remains

a dreaming gaze and a chaste heart.

    That pledge—lovers may vanish

upon her face, but it does not vanish.

The skin of the veins was sealed over it,

for it is kneaded with our purest blood.

O messenger of the beloved, no, no—do not tell

him; his unbroken sorrow is enough for him.

Do not tell him what you saw; console

him, for consolation may dispel sorrow.

    شَبَّ مِنهُ لِعُرسِنا إِكليلُ

    Tell him that his love is in my veins;

from it a wreath has sprung for our wedding.

Tell him it will turn into a spring

    everlasting—that impossible love.

Tell Layla, O bird, tell my beloved:

A generation will come, and a generation will go,

and upon our love are blossoms of eternity,

and upon it are kisses from its spirit.

Tell Layla: I saw him; he is intoxicated,

and in his eyes is a beautiful dream.
