نَحنُwe بِتناwe have become مُستَعبدينَenslaved وَلكِنand yet
نَحنُ بِتنا مُستَعبدينَ وَلكِن
مُستقلينindependent فيin بِلادthe land المرضىthe sick
مُستقلين في بِلاد المرضى
We have become enslaved, and yet
We are enslaved but in
Independent in the land of the sick;
The land of the sick, independent
مستقلينindependent بِالخمولِin lethargy وَبِالذُلِّand in humiliation سكاintoxi- (first part of سكارى)
مستقلين بِالخمولِ وَبِالذُلِّ سكا
رى-cated (completes سكارى) يعضَّناbites us الجَهلُignorance عَضّاa biting (for emphasis)
رى يعضَّنا الجَهلُ عَضّا
Independent in lethargy and humiliation, intoxi-
Independent in apathy and humiliation,
cated, while ignorance bites us hard.
Ignorance gnaws at us with its teeth.
أَيُّهاO you الفارِضwho imposes السلاحَarms عَلَيناupon us
أَيُّها الفارِض السلاحَ عَلَينا
كَيفَhow بِاللّهِby God تستحلُّyou deem lawful الفرضاthe imposition
كَيفَ بِاللّهِ تستحلُّ الفرضا
O you who impose arms upon us,
O you who force arms upon us
How, by God, can you deem this imposition lawful?
How dare you justify force?
لَيسَthere is not فيin كسروانKesrouan قطّat all سلاحarms
لَيسَ في كسروان قطّ سلاح
لَيسَthere is not فيin كسروانKesrouan سَيفٌa sword يُنضىis unsheathed
لَيسَ في كسروان سَيفٌ يُنضى
There are no arms at all in Kesrouan;
In Keserwan there are no arms,
There is no sword in Kesrouan to be unsheathed;
No swords are forged,
لَيسَthere is not فيin كسروانKesrouan إِلّاexcept لحاظٌglances
لَيسَ في كسروان إِلّا لحاظٌ
هيَthey أَقوىstronger مِنthan السِلاحِarms وَأَمضىand keener
هيَ أَقوى مِن السِلاحِ وَأَمضى
In Kesrouan there are only glances;
In Keserwan there is nothing but shrouds
They are stronger than arms, and keener.
They are stronger than weapons and more definitive.
