And on You I depend for all my solace.

If You withhold consolation from lovers,
If You forbid the beloved's consolation,
then what have You left for poets?
Then what have You left for the poets?

Lord, protect her and keep her for me as shade
Lord, protect her and keep her for me as a shadow
of tenderness stretching across my desert.
Of tenderness that stretches across my desert.

And raise the wicked tongues away from her,
and the harm in dark glances.
And harm in the black, envious eyes.

You, O Lord, have created no beauty
You, my Lord, did not create a beauty
like hers among the pure angels.
Like hers among the pure angels.

You, O Lord, have created no fidelity
You, my Lord, did not create a loyalty
among women like that which nourished her love.
Like that which her love won among women.

You, O Lord, have created no women
You, my Lord, did not create any women
like Layla, pure in her innermost being.
Like Layla, pure of heart.

She, my Lord, is a piece of You in love
she flowed from Your green tears.
That flowed from Your green tears.

Will she then wither, while within You is spring,
Can she become withered while You are spring,
ever fragrant, with sweet dews?
Ever sweet, sweet of breeze?

My God, bring the far ones close to me
and keep my relatives' harm far from me.
And distance the harm of my kin.

Lord, turn my eyes away from every living being.
Lord, turn my eyes away from all the living,
Lord, seal my hearing against tidings.
Lord, deafen my hearing to news.
