أَمِنَis it in keeping with العَدلِjustice خالِقَO Creator of الأَرواحِsouls
أَنthat يَغيبَshould vanish الجِمالُbeauty (contextual reading) قَبلَbefore الصَباحِmorning
Is it just, O Creator of souls,
Does the creator of souls, the just one
that beauty should vanish before morning?
Allow beauty to disappear before dawn?
أَمنis it in keeping with العَدلjustice أَنthat يُرىbe seen القَلبُthe heart عَطthirst- (beginning of 'thirsty')
شانَ-y (completion of 'thirsty') وَخمرُwhile the wine of القُلوبِhearts فيin الأَقداحِthe goblets
Is it just that the heart should be seen thirst-
Does the just one allow a heart to be seen as desperate
y, while the wine of hearts is in the goblets?
While the wine of hearts is in cups?
أَمنis it in keeping with العدلjustice أَنthat تَجولَshould wander عُيونٌeyes
فيin ظَلامٍdarkness والزيتُwhile the oil فيin المِصباحthe lamp
Is it just that eyes should wander
Does the just one allow eyes
in darkness, while oil is in the lamp?
To wander in darkness with oil in the lamp?
إِنif تَكُنyou are تَحرمُdenying الطُيورَthe birds سَماهاtheir sky
فَلِماذاthen why خَلَقتَdid you create ريشَthe feathers of الجَناحِthe wing
If you are denying the birds their sky,
If you forbid birds their sky
then why did you create the feathers of the wing?
Why then did you create the wing's feather?
وَتَناءَتand wandered far عَيناهhis two eyes فيin الشَفَقِthe twilight الاخضَرِgreen
فَاِنحَطَّتاthen they both alighted عَلىupon فَلّاحِa farmer
And his eyes wandered far in the green twilight,
And his eyes roamed upon the green dusk
then alighted upon a farmer,
Then landed upon a farmer

ploughing the earth, calm and at ease,
Who tills the earth calmly and peacefully
and cutting the furrows like a surgeon.
And rips the darkness like a surgeon

ماhow أَلَذَّsweet الصَفاءَthe purity فيin ماءِthe water of كَأسِهhis cup
He said: Blessed is he, and blessed is his soul!
He said blessed is he and blessed is his soul
How sweet the purity in the water of his cup!
How sweet is the purity in the water of his cup
ماhow أَعَزَّprecious الاِعشابَthe grasses حَولَaround سَواقيهِhis irrigation channels
وَأَغناهُand how rich he is فيin قَناعَةِcontentment with بُؤسِهhis poverty
How precious the grasses around his irrigation channels,
How dear are the plants around his canals
and how rich he is in contentment with his poverty!
And how rich is he in his poverty
لاnot يَرىhe sees غَيرَother than حَقلِهِhis field إِنwhen أَطلَّappears الفَجرُdawn

He sees nothing but his field when dawn appears,
He sees nothing but his field when dawn breaks
or, when evening comes, only his familiar company.
Or when evening comes, nothing but his own company
جاهِلٌunlettered يَجهَلُknows nothing of القِراءَةَreading فيin الأَسفارِbooks
لكِنَّهُbut he حَكيمٌis wise بِفَأسِهِwith his hoe
Unlettered, he knows nothing of reading books,
Ignorant, he ignores reading books
yet he is wise with his hoe.
Yet he is wise with his axe
غَدُهhis tomorrow مِثلُlike يَومِهِhis today لَيسَdoes not يَغشاهُovershadow him شَقاءٌmisery
وَيَومُهُand his today مِثلُlike أَمسِهhis yesterday
His tomorrow is like his today; no misery overshadows him,
His tomorrow is like his day, no misery befalls him
and his today is like his yesterday.
And his day is like his yesterday
