    That day—what it was, and what it became!

    It was coolness, and became pitch and fire.

    You said, when the earth marshaled its laws

    against us: They shall not attain their aims.

    For the bliss we created within us

    and heaven watered will never fade away.

    If a calamity has come from Hell,

    it is to test mighty love.

    فَليَشيدوا الحُصونَ وَالأَسوارا

    O my beloved, love will fill my prison;

    so let them build fortresses and walls.

    And I shall discern you within it, in body and soul,

    and in tenderness, chastity, and dignity.

    Can prisons deprive the heart

    of its visions and veil remembrance?

    In my solitude I shall call to every cloud,

    every fragrance that drifts and every bird that flies:

    Tell the earth, O fragrances and O clouds,

    and O birds, and spread the secrets.

    خَبِّريها أَنّي أُحِبُّ جَهارا

    Tell her that I love my beloved;

    tell her that I love openly.

    إِنَّ كوخاً أَشدُّ مِنها جدارا

    Tell the earth, tell her, and say:

    Indeed, a hut has stronger walls than hers;

    indeed, a house we built upon beauty—

    heaven will surely refuse to let it collapse.

    إِنَّ بي عِرقٌ يُحرِّقُ الأَبصارا

    O my beloved, as I have lived, so shall I live.

    Indeed, within me is a vein that scorches the eyes;

    and on every edge of my eyelids

    is a vein from you that scorches the eyes.

    Whenever darkness drowns my eyes,

    love makes lights rise within my blood.
