Whose is this eye that does not sleep?
It is an eye with sins for its light.
آلَمَتهpained him ذِكرىthe memory of فَتاةَa girl وَفيand in عَينَيهِhis two eyes

And on the gloomy shore was a dark haze,
And over Tyre, desolation and dark haze.
حاوَلhe tried النَومَsleep غيرbut أَنthat طُيوفاًphantoms
جاوَرَتdwelt beside عَينَهhis eye وَفيهاand in them اِنتِقامُvengeance

He tried to sleep, but phantoms
Dwelt beside his eye, with vengeance in them.

So he recoiled from his bed like a sinner
Whom dreams had awakened from his sleep.
إِنَّindeed عَينَthe eye of الأَثيمِthe sinner جُرحٌa wound عَميقٌdeep
قَذِرُfilthy الجانِبَينِboth sides لاdoes not يَلتامُheal
Indeed, the sinner's eye is a deep wound,
Filthy on both sides, it does not heal.
وَتَراءَتand appeared لَهُto him مَجاريthe watercourses of الواديthe valley
كَسَريرlike a bed يَغيمُgrows dim فيin الأَبعادِthe distances
And the valley's watercourses appeared to him
Like a bed growing dim in the distance.

So he wept, recalling the sweetness of his past
And a love that passed away with the roses.

He said, “What befell the nights gone by?
How did the executioner's hand ravage them?”

And he writhed, crying, “Alas for my conscience!
This executioner is none other than my heart.
طَرَحتكَcast you out السَماءُheaven عنfrom قَلبِthe heart of غَلواءَGhalwa
كَفَرعٍlike a branch رِجسٍfoul منfrom الأَجسادِthe bodies
Heaven cast you out of Ghalwa's heart
Like a foul branch from bodies.
خائِنَbetrayer of الحُبِّlove انindeed حُبَّكَyour love دونٌbase
فَاِحتَجَبso hide yourself فيهِwithin it عنfrom عُيونthe eyes of العِبادِhumankind
Betrayer of love, your love is indeed base;
So hide within it from the eyes of men!”

جُزُرُthe islands of النورِlight فيin الفَضاءthe expanse الرَماديgray
Then stillness prevailed, and vanished
The islands of light in the gray expanse.
لَمdid not بَرَsee (probable reading) الفَجرَthe dawn غاسِلاًwashing بضياهُwith its light
هَضابِthe hills of المَدينَةِthe city المَردومَهburied
He did not see the dawn washing with its light
The hills of the buried city,

كَجِنِّlike jinn عَلىupon قُبورٍgraves قَديمَهancient
And the towers' domes, which the light awakens,
Like jinn upon ancient graves.

Sodom
He fled without turning back, like the people of Sodom
When God burned Sodom.
مُزجَwas mingled النورُthe light بِالدُجىwith the darkness حينَwhen خَطَّtraced الفَجرُthe dawn
فيupon صَفحَةِthe page of السَماءِthe sky رُسومَهits outlines
Light was mingled with darkness when dawn traced
Its outlines upon the sky's page,
كَضَميرِlike the conscience of الأَثيمِthe sinner يَشمِلُهُenfolds it الصَفحُforgiveness
وَتَبقىand remains منof وَخزِهِits sting جُرثومهa germ
Like a sinner's conscience, which forgiveness enfolds,
While a germ of its sting remains.
فَأَطَلَّتthen she looked out غَلواءُGhalwa منfrom كُوَّةِthe small window of الخِدرِthe secluded chamber

Then Ghalwa looked out from the chamber's small window,
And in her soul were great sorrows.

She said, “The dawn is pale like my face,
And aching, distracted, like my aching soul.
