    Within the folds of bygone ages, how many

    Lessons lie for the children of ages yet to come!

    The lessons of nights, like the nights themselves, are many,

    But few are the hearts that heed.

    Time destroys us, while we imagine that it

    Exhausts its days and nights through us.

    And when annihilation walks among us and frightens us,

    Imagination creates a second life for us.

    Life is a poem whose verses

    Are our lifetimes, and death in it is the rhyme.

    How deeply you adore the world, yet resent her rebuff!

    Have you forgotten that faithlessness is the fair woman's nature?

    And you wish her bliss would stay with you.

    Did you not know you must send the fair one away?

    Forsake pride in what you have, for indeed

    Your world is passing away, and your soul is mortal.

    Indeed, those whose sandals trod al-Suha

    Had their brows trodden by the hooves of livestock.

    Were any living being immortal upon the earth,

    Harun would not have died, nor Muawiyah passed away.

    Or had glory lasted forever, never would

    Baghdad have joined the ranks of crumbling ruins.

    Calamities ravaged her, so her houses are

    Ruins revisited by dust-sweeping winds.

    Owls seek shelter there, unafraid

    Of any jet-black cawing bird [final word unclear].

    Fate descended, and her wall did not protect her,

    Though time and again it repelled invading armies.

    And the ravager of thrones swept away her kings,

    So they seemed hollow stumps of palm trees.

    Where are the towering palaces and their people?

    All have perished; no remnant of them remains.

    وَلَقَد تُرى حِلَلُ المَحاسِنِ كاسِيَه

    Her landmarks faded, and decay transformed her,

    Though once she was seen clad in beauty's robes;

    ذاوٍ وَلا دورُ الصِناعَةِ خالِيَه

    In days when learning's great trees were not withered,

    Nor shriveled, and the houses of industry were not empty;

    فيها وَلا هِمَمُ الأَعارِبِ وانِيَه

    In days when the language of the Book was no stranger

    There, nor the Arabs' aspirations flagging;

    أَهلُ الثَراءِ ذَوُ البُرودِ الضافِيَه

    In days when learning's people were envied

    By the wealthy, wearers of ample striped cloaks;

    كَلِفٌ بِهِ وَلِكُلِّ شِعرٍ راوِيَه

    In days when every beauty had a poet

    Enamored of it, and every poem a narrator;

    جَذلانُ يَهزَءُ بِالبُحورِ الطامِيَه

    In days when the Tigris was serene and calm,

    Joyous, mocking the swelling seas;

    نَهرُ الفُراتِ وَكُلُّ عَينٍ جارِيَه

    The Nile its faithful servant, and its slave

    The Euphrates River, and every flowing spring;

    أَو أَنَّها شَجَرٌ عَلَيهِ حانِيَه

    The stars longed to be its pebbles,

    Or trees bending tenderly over it;

    And every cloud that passed by it wished

    That it were clouds pouring rain upon her.

    And the sun saw her reflection at midmorning

    On its surface, then spent the night thirsty yet quenched.

    يَكسو الجَلالُ سُهولَهُ وَرَوابِيَه

    In days when the East's domain inspired dread,

    Majesty clothed its plains and hills;

    حَسَدَ العَواطِلُ أُختَهُنَّ الحالِيَه

    In days when capitals envied her, just as

    Unadorned women envied their jeweled sister;

    مِصرٌ وَيَحمي ذِكرَها أَنطاكِيَه

    And how often her glory brought honor

    To Egypt, while her renown shielded Antioch;

    In days when Harun managed her affairs,

    O age of Harun, my greetings be upon you!

    وَأَذَلَّ صارِمُهُ المُلوكَ العاتِيَه

    A king whose learning wrested power from ignorance,

    Whose keen sword humbled defiant kings;

    تَغشى حَواضِرَها وَتَغشى البادِيَه

    And his gifts went wandering through the lands,

    Overspreading their cities and overspreading the desert;

    He filled the lands with benefactions and learning,

    And the earth with justice, and souls with comfort.

    Thus the desert dwellers grew civilized in his days,

    And even the savage beasts grew tame.

    And Baghdad donned a robe of majesty,

    She sees it no more—or will she see it again?

    Those were days that vanished, just as

    An eraser wipes letters from parchment.

    Nothing remains but their memory—how beautiful!

    A memory at which decaying bones rejoice.

    If time itself were a book, you would be, O

    Age of civilization, its text and its margins.

    An age—if a herald came announcing its return,

    Then I would surely cloak the herald in my youth.

    في الأَرضِ مِثلُ الشامِخاتِ الراسِيَه

    Ah, father of al-Ma'mun, your memory is everlasting,

    On earth, like the lofty, firmly rooted mountains;

    Enduring through the ages as long as they endure,

    And likewise endures the memory of those with lofty souls.

    If there is no likeness of you among us,

    It is because your spirit is always near.

    هِيَ في الكَواكِبِ شَمسُها المُتَلاِيَه

    It is a fragrant flower in the groves;

    Among the stars, it is their glittering sun.

    حَيٌّ وَكَيفَ طَوَتكَ هَذي الطاوِيَه

    I marvel how you died, while among humankind

    A living soul remained—and how this enfolder folded you away;

    And at Time, which tears down what you built.

    Woe to Time! Did it not stand in awe of its builder?

    Today my soul complains to you of its grief,

    For you are surely the refuge of every complaining soul.

    I wonder, do you know your house has been transformed,

    From Ihaq's voice to a death-announcing woman's cry?

    I wonder, do you know that what you firmly founded

    Has been squandered by heedless souls?

    Alas for this East after you! It has

    Through weakness come to the brink of the abyss.

    Once it would not accept the stars as pillows,

    And today its people are content with mere well-being.

    سُحِروا أَوِ اِصطُرِعوا بِبِنتِ الخابِيَه

    Yielding themselves to stupor, as though

    Bewitched, or felled by the wine-jar's daughter;

    Submitting themselves to fate, as though

    Already seized, though the overwhelming calamity has not yet seized them.

    Glory means attaining what is precious, but to them

    Glory is nothing but a young gazelle or a singing woman.

    People yearn for life to obey their wills,

    But they want life just as it is.

    Their souls have shrunk, so even their mighty man

    Fears the coward as he fears the tyrant.

    They bore burdens in silence, as though

    The prohibitive 'no' were too large for their jaws.

    The world had never heard, before them, of a people

    Who died without leaving their perishing dwellings.

    By God, if only they had guarded their glories!

    For those are indeed the hallmark of advanced peoples.

    Foreign brutes took possession of their affairs and their goods,

    Even their grazing herds, and even their utensils.

    And oh, the Arab's shame before his ancestors!

    Their vile slaves have become his masters.

    وَطِؤوا اللُوارَ وَدَوَّخوا إِسبانِيَه

    O sons of those proud, mighty rulers who

    Trod the Loire and subdued Spain;

    فَاِستَخبِروهُ فَذاكَ أَصدَقُ راوِيَه

    Their history lies around you and before you;

    So question it: it is the most truthful narrator.

    وَرَنوا المَعاقِلَ فَهيَ أَرضٌ داحِيَه

    They led armies, and every plain was too narrow;

    And they gazed upon strongholds, which became open ground.

    رُعباً وَأَجفَلَتِ الصُروحُ العالِيَه

    And they attacked, and thrones cast down their kings

    In terror, and the towering palaces fled in fright;

    And they walked upon the stars' heads, which still

    Stare through the night, distracted by dread.

    Their lean horses came to drink at the Milky Way,

    While the shooting stars around the Milky Way were thirsty.

    أَمِنوا وَما أَمِنَ الزَمانُ دَواهِيَه

    Time's vicissitudes gave them its reins;

    They were safe, but Time was not safe from its calamities.

    I do not rouse you to conquests like theirs,

    But to preserve the remnants that remain.

    Did your forefathers humble the noses of kings,

    Yet livestock herders inflict humiliation upon you?

    How much humiliation you endure, as though you

    Were in bliss—yet humiliation is a blazing fire!

    O men! Do you not know that you

    Are a vanishing nation if you do not rise?

    حَسَدَت مَدامِعُهُ عَلَيكِ قَوافِيَه

    O Abode of Peace, greetings from a poet

    Whose tear ducts envied his rhymes over you;

    So he poured the waters of his tear ducts; and had he

    Been among morning rain clouds, he would have poured a morning cloud's water.

    If your glory could be restored by weeping,

    His eye sockets would have dripped crimson blood.

    So every soul wastes away in sorrow over you,

    And for a calamity like yours, a weeping woman is borrowed.
