The sky pushed the clouds away from her breast,

And light peered out from winter's cave.

So the hills are robes of fine silk,

And the watercourses are chatter and song.

    فَمَتى يَرجِعُ لِلدُنيا الصَفاء

    Summer returned, all smiles and fragrance;

So when will serenity return to the world,

So I may see paradise in every land,

    And see all people happy?

The war has ended and departed, yet

There is no end to the terror of war.

If we wake, there is talk of battle

    In inhabited country and on barren ground;

And when we sleep, there appear in slumber

Images of horror and specters of annihilation.

For it is raging ink on the pages,

And on the radio, the hiss of electricity.

Today we guard against tomorrow's evil,

And when morning folds away, we fear the evening.

How strange, when war is a gateway to death,

And a road to destruction and obliteration—

How can the children of humankind love it? Have they

Come to hate remaining in this world?

    If humankind's knowledge heals them,

O my God, restore stupidity to humankind.

And let Noah's flood come before

The earth drowns in a flood of blood.

And safeguard the secrets and conceal their essence

From the learned and the masters of intelligence.

For you have multiplied the causes of harm

When you multiplied the scientists among us.

How often we have found a deadly scourge

Whenever you moved a veil aside from a secret.

    Humankind has advanced, yet still

The law of the jungle is the law of the strong.

Killing has been forbidden, but to them

The easiest thing of all is killing the weak.

Do not tell me, 'Thus has God decreed.'

You do not know the secrets of divine decree.

He came to me with water to quench my thirst—

A friend of mine, one of my faithful companions.

    عَطَشُ الأَرواحِ لا يُروى بِماء

    O my friend, keep the water away from my mouth;

The thirst of souls cannot be quenched with water.

I do not long for cups of wine,

No, nor do I seek glory or wealth.

My longing is only for a world of contentment,

And for an age of peace and brotherhood.

    السَما عِندِيَ قُربُ الأَصدِقاء

    Do not promise me heaven, my friend;

To me, heaven is the nearness of friends.

And now I see myself in their midst,

So now it is as though I were in heaven.
