روحيmy soul الَّتيwhich بِالأَمسِyesterday كانَتwas تَرتَعُgrazing freely
فيin الغابِthe forest مِثلَlike الظَبيَةِthe doe القَمراءِwhite
My soul, which yesterday was grazing
My soul that yesterday grazed
My soul, which yesterday was roaming free,
In the forest like a white doe,
In the forest like a blonde gazelle
In the forest, like a moonlit doe,
تَقتاتُfeeds بِالثَمَرِon the fruit الجَنِيِّripe فَتَشبَعُand becomes sated
وَيَبُلُّand moistens غَلَّتَهاits thirst رَشاشُspray of الماءِwater
Feeding on ripe fruit and having its fill,
Feasting on wild fruit to its fill
Feeding on fresh fruit until satisfied,
While a spray of water quenched its thirst,
Dew sprinkling its fleece
And the water's spray quenching its burning thirst.
نَظَرَتlooked إِلَيكِtoward you فَأَصبَحَتso it became لاnot تَقنَعُcontent
بِالماءِwith water وَالأَفياءِand shade فيon الغَبراءِthe dusty earth
Looked toward you and became no longer content
It looked at you, now no longer content
It looked at you and became content no longer
With water and shade on the dusty earth.
With water and shade in the dunes
With the water and the shadows of the dusty earth.
تُصغيlistens وَتُنصِتُand listens attentively وَالحَمامَةُand the dove تَسجَعُcoos
إِصغاؤُهاits listening لَكَto you لَيسَis not لِلوَرقاءِto the gray dove
It listens and attends while the dove coos;
It listens as the dove coos
It listens and attends while the dove coos,
It listens to you, not to the gray dove.
Its hearing for you, not for the leaves
But its listening is for you, not for the dove.
نادَيتِهاyou called it فَلَهاso it has إِلَيكِtoward you تَطلَعُa yearning
هَذاthis التَطَلُّعُyearning كانَwas أَصلَthe root of شَقائيmy misery
You called it, and it yearns toward you;
I called it and towards you it aspires
You called it, and towards you it aspires;
This yearning was the root of my misery.
This yearning was the origin of my torment
This aspiration was the root of my misery.
جَنَّحتَنيyou gave me wings كَيماso that أَطيرَI might fly فَلَمyet did not أَطِرI fly
هَيهاتِimpossible إِنَّكِindeed you قَدalready طَوَيتِyou folded up سَمائيmy sky
You gave me wings so I might fly, yet I did not fly.
You gave me wings so I could fly but I did not soar
You gave me wings that I might fly, yet I did not fly;
Impossible—you have already folded up my sky.
Alas you folded up my skies
Far from it—for you have folded up my sky.
قَدindeed كانَused to يَسبينيcaptivate me الجَمالُbeauty الرائِعُsplendid
حَتّىuntil لَمَحتُكِI glimpsed you فَهوَso it لاdoes not يَسبينيcaptivate me
Once splendid beauty held me captive,
Beauty used to captivate me
Magnificent beauty used to captivate me,
Until I glimpsed you; now it no longer captivates me.
Until I saw you, now it does not entrance me
Until I glimpsed you, and now it holds me no more.
عَصَفَتraged بِصَدريthrough my breast لِليَقينِof certainty زَوابِعُwhirlwinds
ثَلَّتtoppled عُروشَthe thrones of تَوَهُّميmy illusions وَظُنونيand my conjectures
Whirlwinds of certainty swept through my breast,
Storms of certainty blew through my chest
Storms of certainty raged within my chest,
Toppling the thrones of my illusions and conjectures.
They ruined the castles of my fancy and suspicions
Toppling the thrones of my delusions and conjectures.
فَأَناso I عَلىover ماwhat ضاعَwas lost مِنِّيَfrom me جازِعُgrief-stricken
إِنَّindeed الَّذيthat which قَدhas ضاعَbeen lost جَدُّvery ثَمينِprecious
So I grieve over what I have lost;
So I grieve what I lost from myself
So I am grieving over what was lost from me,
What has been lost is precious indeed.
Truly what is lost is precious
For that which was lost is truly precious.
لَولاكِbut for you ماnot ماتَdied الخَيالُimagination اليافِعُyouthful
أَفَتَعجَبينَdo you then marvel? إِذاif كَرِهتُI loathe يَقينيmy certainty
But for you, youthful imagination would not have died.
Had it not been for you the soaring imagination would not have died
Were it not for you, the youthful imagination would not have died;
Are you then surprised if I loathe my certainty?
Are you surprised when I hate my certainty?
Do you wonder, then, if I detest my certainty?
هَذاthis صَنيعُكِyour doing بيto me فَماso what أَناI صانِعُdoing
قَدhas شاءَwilled بَحرُكِyour sea أَنthat تَضِلَّgo astray سَفينيmy ships
This is your doing to me—what am I to do?
This is your doing to me, what shall I do?
This is your doing to me, so what am I to do?
Your sea has willed that my ships lose their way.
Your sea willed that my ship be lost
Your sea has willed that my vessel go astray.
جَرَّدتِyou stripped هَذاthis الطينَclay مِنof أَوهامِهِits illusions
وَكَبُرتِand you grew عَنbeyond قارورَةٍa flask مِنof طينِclay
You stripped this clay of its illusions,
You stripped this clay of its whims
You stripped this clay of its illusions,
And outgrew a flask of clay.
And grew beyond a clay vessel
And you grew too great for a flask made of clay.
كَيفَhow الوُصولُreaching إِلَيكِyou ياO نارَfire of القِرىhospitality
أَناI فيin الحَضيضِthe depths وَأَنتِand you فيin الجَوزاءِal-Jawza (a constellation)
How can I reach you, O fire of hospitality?
How to reach you, O fire of dwellings
How can I reach you, O beacon-fire of the night?
I am in the depths, and you in al-Jawza.
I am in the abyss while you are in the stars
I am in the abyss, and you are in the high stars.
ليI have أَلفُa thousand باصِرَةٍeye تَحِنُّyearns كَماjust as تَرىsees
لَكِنَّbut دونَكِbetween me and you أَلفُa thousand أَلفِthousand غَطاءِveil
I have a thousand eyes that yearn as they see,
I have a thousand eyes that pine as you see
I have a thousand eyes that yearn as they see,
But a thousand thousand veils stand between me and you.
But beyond you are a thousand thousand veils
But between you and me are a million veils.
لوif مِنof ثَرىًdust مَزَّقتُهاI would tear them بِيَدِwith the hand of الثَرىthe dust
لَكِنَّهاbut they سُجُفٌcurtains مِنَof الأَضواءِlights
Were they made of dust, I would tear them with the hand of dust;
If only from dust I could tear them by the hand of dust
If they were of soil, I would tear them with hands of soil,
But they are curtains of light.
But they are curtains of light
But they are curtains woven of lights.
ساءَلتُI questioned قَلبيmy heart إِذwhen رَأىit saw فَتَحَيَّراso it grew bewildered
ماذاwhat شَرِبتَyou drank فَمِدتَso you reeled قالَit said دِمائيmy blood
I questioned my heart when it saw and grew bewildered:
I asked my heart when it saw and was perplexed
I asked my heart when it saw and grew bewildered,
"What did you drink, that you reeled?" It said, "My blood."
What did you drink that you offered my blood?
"What did you drink that you swooned?" It said, "My own blood."
ياO لَيتَهُif only it قَدhad ظَلَّremained أَعمىblind كَالوَرىlike humankind
فَلَقَدfor indeed نَعِمتُI was happy وَكانَand it was فيin ظَلماءِdarkness
Oh, if only it had remained blind like humankind;
Oh, would that it had remained blind like the rest
Would that it had remained blind like the rest of mankind,
For I was happy while it dwelt in darkness.
For I was blissful and was in darkness
For I would have been blissful, while it remained in darkness.
قَدhas شَوَّشَتdisturbed كَفُّthe hand of النَهارِday سَكينَتيmy peace
ياO هَذِهِyou there رُدّيgive back إِلَيَّto me مَسائيmy evening
The hand of day has disturbed my peace.
The palm of daylight disturbed my tranquility
The hand of day has disturbed my serenity;
O you, give my evening back to me!
O you, give me back my evenings
O you, give me back my evening.
أَمسَيتُI became حينَwhen لَمَستِنيyou touched me بِيَدَيكِwith your two hands
ليI have أَلفُa thousand باصِرَةٍeye وَأَلفُand a thousand جَناحِwing
When you touched me with your two hands, I came to have
In the evening when your hand touched me
I became, when you touched me with your hands,
A thousand eyes and a thousand wings.
I had a thousand eyes and a thousand wings
Possessed of a thousand eyes and a thousand wings.
وَلَمَحتُand I glimpsed نارَthe fire of الوَحيِinspiration فيin عَينَيكِyour two eyes
وَالوَحيُand inspiration كانَwas سُلافَةَthe choicest wine of الأَرواحِsouls
And I glimpsed the fire of inspiration in your eyes;
And saw the fire of revelation in your eyes
And I glimpsed the fire of revelation in your eyes,
And inspiration was the choicest wine of souls.
Revelation was the vigor of spirits
And revelation was the purest wine of souls.
فَنَشَرتُso I spread أَجنِحَتيmy wings وَحُمتُand I circled عَلَيكِover you
مُتَوَهِّماًimagining أَنّيthat I وَجَدتُI had found صَباحيmy morning
So I spread my wings and circled over you,
So I spread my wings and clung to you
So I spread my wings and hovered over you,
Imagining that I had found my morning.
Thinking I found my morn
Deluding myself that I had found my morning.
قَدindeed كانَwas حَتفيmy death فيin الدُنُوِّdrawing near إِلَيكِto you
حَتفُthe death of الفَراشَةِthe moth فيin فَمِthe mouth of المِصباحِthe lamp
My death lay in drawing near to you—
My doom was in yearning for you
My doom lay in drawing near to you,
A moth's death in the mouth of the lamp.
The moth's doom in the lamp's mouth
The doom of the moth in the mouth of the lamp.
فَسَقَطتُso I fell مُرتَعِشاًtrembling عَلىat قَدَمَيكِyour two feet
أَلنارُthe fire مَهديmy cradle وَالدُخانُand the smoke وِشاحيmy mantle
So I fell trembling at your feet,
So I fell trembling at your feet
So I fell, trembling, at your feet,
Fire my cradle, and smoke my mantle.
The fire my cradle and the smoke my shroud
The fire my cradle, and the smoke my shroud.
ياO لَيتَif only نورَكِyour light حينَwhen أَحرَقَنيit burned me اِنطَوىwithdrew
فَعَلىfor in ضِيائِكِyour radiance قَدhave لَمَستُI touched جِراحيmy wounds
Oh, if only your light had withdrawn when it burned me;
Oh, would that when your light burned me it folded
Would that your light, when it burned me, had faded away,
For in your radiance I have touched my wounds.
For on your glow I felt my wounds
For by your glow, I have seen my own wounds.
