إِذاif سَحَقَتcrushes أَرضَناour earth القُنبُلَهthe bomb
كَماjust as يَسحَقُcrushes الحَجَرُthe stone الخَردَلَهthe mustard seed
If the bomb crushes our earth,
If our land is crushed by the bomb
If the bomb crushes our land,
As a stone crushes a mustard seed,
As the stone crushes the mustard seed
Just as a stone crushes a mustard seed,
وَقَوَّضَand topples مَفعولَهاits force الراسِياتِthe firmly rooted mountains
فَصارَتso they become غُباراًdust لَهُit has جَلجَلَهa rumbling roar
And its force topples the firmly rooted mountains,
And its impact demolishes the towering structures
And its force undermines the anchored mountains,
So they become dust with a rumbling roar;
Turning them into swirling dust
Turning them into dust with a resounding roar,
وَدَبَّand creeps الفَناannihilation فيinto ذَواتِcreatures possessing الجَناحِthe wing
وَغَلغَلَand penetrates deeply فيinto النَبتِthe plants فَاِستَأصَلَهso uproots it
And annihilation creeps into winged creatures,
And decay spreads in winged creatures
And annihilation creeps into the winged creatures,
And spreads through the plants and uproots them,
And churns in the vegetation, uprooting it
And penetrates the vegetation, rooting it out,
وَفيand into الماشِياتِthe walking creatures وَفيand into الزاحِفاthe crawling creatures (continued)
تِcompletion of 'crawling creatures' عَلَيهاupon it إِلىto آخِرِthe end of السِلسِلَهthe chain
And into walking creatures, and into crawling ones
And in the animals and the reptiles
And into the walking beasts and the crawling things
Upon it, to the very end of the chain;
In succession to the end of the chain
upon the earth, to the very end of the chain,
فَلاso no زَهرَblossoms يَأرُجُgive off fragrance فيin رَوضَةٍa garden
وَلاand no ديكَrooster يَصدَحُcrows فيin مَزبَلَهa dunghill
So no blossom gives off fragrance in a garden,
So no flower gives off fragrance in a garden
So no flower yields fragrance in a garden,
And no rooster crows on a dunghill;
And no rooster crows in a dunghill
And no rooster calls out from a dunghill,
وَضاعَand is lost الزَمانُtime وَمِقياسُهُand its measure
وَأَشبَهَand resembles آخِرُهُits end أَوَّلَهits beginning
And time and its measure are lost,
And time is lost and its measure
And time is lost, along with its measure,
And its end resembles its beginning;
And its end resembles its beginning
Its end resembling its beginning,
وَلَمand did not يَبقَremain حَيٌّa living being عَلىon سَطحِهاits surface
وَأَصبَحَand becomes عِزريلُAzrael لاno شُغلَwork لَهfor him
And no living being remains on its surface,
And no living thing remains on its surface
And no living thing remains upon its surface,
And Azrael is left with no work to do—
And Azrael has nothing to occupy him
And Azrael is left with no work to do,
فَذَلِكَthen that خَطبٌa calamity يَهولُterrifies النُفوسَsouls
تُصَوِّرُهُthey picture it قَبلَbefore أَنthat تَحمِلَهthey bear it
Then that is a calamity that terrifies souls
So this is news that horrifies souls
That is a calamity that strikes terror in souls,
As they picture it before they bear it.
Imagining it before bearing it
Imagining it before they must bear it,
وَلَكِنَّand yet أَمراًone thing يَعزيconsoles الجَميعَeveryone
إِذاif سَحَقَتcrushes أَرضَناour earth القُنبُلَهthe bomb
And yet one thing consoles everyone:
But it's a matter that consoles everyone
Yet one matter offers consolation to all,
If the bomb crushes our earth,
If our land is crushed by the bomb
If the bomb indeed crushes our land:
فَلَنthen will not يُدَعَleave المَوتُdeath حَيّاًa living being يَلوblames (continued)
مُcompletion of 'blames' سِواهُanyone other than him عَلىfor هَذِهِthis المَقتَلَهslaughter
Then death will leave no one alive to blame
For death will not be left alive
That death will not leave a living soul behind
Anyone else for this slaughter.
Except it over this killing field
to blame another for this massacre.
