أَعطَيتُI gave مَنthe one whom أَعشَقُهاI adore her وردَةًa rose
مِنfrom بَعدِafter أَنthat أَودَعتُهاI entrusted her with قَلبيmy heart
I gave the woman I adore a rose,
I gave a rose to the one I love
I gave a rose to the one I adore,
After I had entrusted her with my heart.
After I had placed her in my heart
After I had already entrusted her with my heart.
فَجَعَلَتso she began تَنثُرُto scatter أَوراقَهاits petals
بِأَنمُلٍwith fingertips كَالغَنَمِlike sheep الرَطبِmoist
So she began scattering its petals
She began to tear its petals
But she began to scatter its petals,
With fingertips like moist sheep.
With fingers like gentle lambs
With fingertips like soft, tender branches.
لاdo not تَسأَلواask العاشِقَthe lover عَنabout قَلبِهِhis heart
قَدalready ضاعَwas lost بَينَamid الضِحكlaughter وَاللَعِبِand play
Do not ask the lover about his heart:
Do not ask the lover about his heart
Do not ask the lover about his heart,
It has been lost amid laughter and play.
It is lost between laughter and play
For it is lost amidst laughter and play.
لَمdid not أَقطِفِI pluck الوَردَةَthe rose مِنfrom غُصنِهاits branch
لَوif لَمnot تَكُنit were كَالخَدِّlike a cheek فيin الإِتِّقادglowing
I would not have plucked the rose from its branch
I did not pluck the rose from its branch
I would not have plucked the rose from its bough,
Had it not been like a cheek in its glow;
If it were not like a glowing cheek
Had it not resembled her cheek in its burning glow.
وَلَمand did not تُمَزِّقtear هِندُHind أَوراقَهاits petals
لَولاwere it not for اِشتِباهٌa resemblance بَينَهاbetween it وَالفُؤادand the heart
And Hind would not have torn its petals
And Hind would not have torn its petals
And Hind would not have torn its petals apart,
Were it not for a resemblance between it and the heart.
If it were not confused with the heart
Were it not for the likeness between them and my heart.
