How many generations passed away before this generation!
How many a generation before this faded away,
How many generations have passed away before this one?
Alas, there is no way to last forever.
Alas, there is no way to immortality!
Alas, there is no path to eternity.

The young laughed at the middle-aged, laughing to excess;
The youth laughed at the elders and drowned,
Youth laughed at old age, drowning in their mirth,
And awoke to find the young themselves middle-aged.
Then they awoke to find that they had become the elders.
Only to wake and find that youth itself had turned old.

We come and go, while time endures forever;
We come and go while time endures,
We come and go, while Time remains immortal;
Morning remains morning, and late afternoon remains late afternoon.
The morn is a morn, and evening is evening.
The dawn remains dawn, and the dusk remains dusk.

Heat and cold erode our bodies,
Heat and cold wear down our bodies,
Would that time changed as we change!
Would that time changed as we change!
Would that Time might change just as we do.

Change in lifeless matter is contraction;
Change means withering for vegetation,
For change in lifeless matter is but contraction,
In living creatures, death; in plants, withering.
Death for the living, and shriveling for inanimate things.
While in the living it is death, and in plants, decay.

Stand by the graves, silent and contemplative:
Stand silently at the cemeteries, contemplating
Stand by the graveyards, silent and contemplative,
How many a silent one and a questioner have vanished there!
As though you were a silent dead man asking questions.
Observing how many silent ones and questioners lie buried there.

And ask the stars how many they saw before us—
Ask the planets how many peoples they saw before us,
And ask the stars how many they have seen before us,
Peoples—and how many a people beheld the stars.
And how many generations the stars have witnessed.
Of nations passed, and how many tribes the stars have witnessed.

The world changes as its people change;
The world keeps changing and so do its people,
The world alters with the altering of its people,
But God's decree admits no change.
But God's command does not change.
Yet God’s command admits no alteration.

O rising sun whose rising has dazzled eyes,
O rising star, whose ascent has captivated all eyes,
After rising comes setting, though you do not know it.
You too will set after rising, though now you know it not.
Know that after every rise—though you may ignore it—comes the setting.

Be gentle and kind to human hearts, for truly,
Hearts' hatred of your brother endures long.
For rancor in hearts against your brother is prolonged.
The malice held in hearts against your brother lasts long.

And listen: the winds' voices are wailing.
And listen, the winds are wailing.
And listen, for the voices of the winds are a wailing cry.

There are thunderbolts forged of iron, and from the dust
Come clouds, and from blood come torrents.
And from blood, floods.
Come blinding clouds, and from the blood come floods.

I did not know, before the flames of war grew fierce,
That beasts of prey and humankind are alike.
That beasts and men are alike.
That wild beasts and mankind were of the same likeness.

Upon whose neck does this wasted blood hang?

Brought by reporters terrified.
Comes news brought by narrators that strikes terror.

You have torn apart your oaths and your covenants,
Though they might well seem like divine revelation.
Into pieces as though they were Scripture.
Though they were once held sacred as holy writ.

You have awakened greeds, marching like armies,
With legions and horses behind them.
With more hosts and cavalry behind.
With yet more armies and cavalry following in their wake.

You have spread hatreds that have become cannons,
And shells, spearheads, and blades.
Shells, bayonets and lances.
And shells, and spearheads, and blades.

Their remains would be as those who submit.
They would have shattered from the violence they inflict.

What Azrael did not know before.
Skills of death that Azrael never knew.

Back to the age of nomadic life! It is
Return to the age of ignorance - it is
Let us return to the age of primitive savagery,
An age it is fitting to call beautiful.
A fine time to be called fine!
For it was an era truly worthy of being called beautiful.

O Cain, forefather of mankind, sleep in peace;
Every man beneath his clothes is Cain.
Each man wraps himself in his own tribe.
For every man now wears the robe of Cain.

Do not boast of your intellects and what they produce,

You had minds before the fighting began!
For you possessed reason only before the fighting began.

The places where happiness once found its rest.

Do not seek your vengeance with sharp blades,
Taking it with sharpened swords brings further vengeance.
Or drive machines in seeking livelihood.
For seeking it with blades only breeds new vengeance.

And traits, are but a single tribe, if you would remember.

The tragic scenes and chapters continue to unfold.

People have not fallen in love with annihilation, but rather,

And reason, there are blinds.
Veils have fallen over their insights and their minds.

The fettered captive is content with his chains.
The bound captive who has accepted his chains.

Two men are not alike: this one's heart is empty,
Two men are not equal: one whose heart is

And that one's heart is ignorant.

The self-deceiver's heart itself is ignorant.
For he who deceives himself is truly ignorant.

Yet the sword hangs over their heads unsheathed.
Yet the sword hangs drawn above their heads.

Most wretched of men is the knowledgeable wretch.
The most wretched of men is the wise one whom no one knows.

Their tears bear witness that it has been slain.

Despair is a form of death, save that its victim
Remains, while his soul passes away.
Remains, while despair itself disappears.
Remains physically, while his spirit fades away.

Has dedicated itself, some being helpers others martyrs.
Has been stricken: one is captive, another slain.

Are anxious for the cackle of rumors and gossip.
Is but rumor and gossip carried upon sheets of paper.

بِئسَ الحَياةُ سَكينَةٌ وَخُمولُ
Rise! Work for your country and your descendants.
Bestir yourselves and work for your country and your children.
Rise up! Work for your lands and for your descendants;
Wretched is a life of stillness and idleness!
Wretched is the idle and stagnant life!
Wretched is a life of passivity and sloth.

Do not close your hands: this is your day.
Do not keep your hands clenched, for this is your day.
Do not withhold your hands, for this is your day;
The worst of humankind is a tight-fisted miser.
The worst of foes is the idle palm.
The worst of men is the tight-fisted miser.
وَعَدَhas promised الإِلاهُGod المُحسِنينَthose who do good بِبَرِّهِwith His bounty

God has promised His bounty to those who do good;
God has promised those who do good with goodness,
God has promised His kindness to those who do good,
And, as you know, His promise is bestowal.
And as you know, His promise is not untrue.
And as you know, His promise is always fulfilled.
