The full moon rose over the for-
-est, on one of the nights,
And saw the fox walking
Stealthily among the grapevines.
Whenever a shadow loomed, he feared
That very shadow, and shivered.
He saw a ravaging lion
Standing beside the pool.
Whenever he sensed a sound,
He filled the valley with roaring.
So the water flows in fear,
Beside the rocks, dark and scowling.
Then the jackal saw the full moon
Gliding slowly through space,
Like a king, around whom the mete-
-ors are soldiers and handmaids.
He said, "If only I were the moon's companion,
Or the moon of the sky, or its image,
I would live free, the stars my neighbors,
And the darkness my vessel.
Safe, I would play with the lightning,
And at times, it would play with me.
I would heed neither the shepherd's might nor
The veteran dog and his assault."
Except that the lion, when
He sighted the laughing moon,
Said, "O son of the night, however much
I hunger, I do not hunger for you.
You are luminous, but you are barren;
There is no prey in you or around you.
Yours is this horizon, but
It belongs also to the stars.
Yet, if you were a lion
Possessor of fangs and claws,
There would not trifle with your bright face
The glances of foxes; guard your beauty."
