وَإِنand even if مَلَأَfilled السِكَكَthe streets الجائِعونthe hungry
Eat and drink, O rich,
Eat and drink, O you who are wealthy,
even if the hungry fill the streets.
Even if the hungry crowd the streets.

وَإِنand even if لَبِسَwore الخِرَقَthe rags البائِسونthe wretched
And wear no silk brocade unless it is new,
And wear nothing but the newest silk,
even if the wretched wear rags.
Even if the wretched are clad in rags.
وَحوطواand surround قُصورَكُمyour palaces بِالرِجالِwith the men
وَحوطواand surround رِجالَكُمyour men بِالحوصونwith the fortresses
And surround your palaces with men,
Surround your palaces with men,
and surround your men with fortresses,
And surround your men with fortresses.

وَلاand not يُبصِرونَthey see الَّذيwhat تَصنَعونyou do
so you do not see hunger's victims,
So you do not see the victims of starvation,
nor do they see what you do.
And they do not see what you are doing.
وَإِنand if ساءَكُمdispleased you أَنَّهُمthat they فيin الوُجودِexistence

And if it displeases you that they exist,
And if it displeases you that they exist,
and troubles you that they wail,
And disturbs you that they wail aloud,

give the order, and the troops will charge at them,
Give the command, and soldiers will assault them,
teaching them how Death slays.
Teaching them how death destroys.
فَهُمfor they مُعتَدونَaggressors وَهُمand they مُجرِمونَcriminals
وَهُمand they مُقلِقونَtroublemakers وَهُمand they ثإِرونrebels
For they are aggressors, and they are criminals,
For they are aggressors and they are criminals,
and they are troublemakers, and they are rebels.
They are agitators and they are rebels.

And those clubs are for those heads,
Those batons are meant for those heads,
and those spears are for those bellies.
And those bayonets are for those bellies.

And those prisons—for whom did you build them,
And those prisons—for whom did you build them,
if you do not thrust them into the prisons?
If not to cast them into the cells?
كِلواmeasure out لِلظُبىto the blades حَقَّthe due هاماتِهِمtheir heads
فَإِنَّfor indeed المُلوكَthe kings كَذاthus يَفعَلونthey act
Measure out to the blades the due of their heads,
Yield the right of their skulls to the blades,
for that is what kings do.
For such is the way that kings behave.

If the troops do not guard you—and you are
If the army does not guard you, when you are
the land's nobles—then whom do they guard?
The masters of the land, whom then will they guard?
وَإِنand if هُمُthey لَمnot يَقتُلواthey kill الأَشقِياءَthe wretched

And if they do not kill the wretched,
And if they do not kill the miserable,
then, oh, I wish I knew whom they kill!
Then I wonder, whom will they kill?

فَإِنَّهُمُfor indeed they لِلرَدىfor death يولَدونthey are born
And do not let their death grieve you,
And let not their death bring you sorrow,
for they are born for death.
For they were born for destruction.

And say, 'Thus has God willed it,
And say: "Thus has God willed,"
and if God decrees a thing, it comes to be.'
"And if God decrees a thing, it comes to be."

And O poor, why complain?
And O poor ones, why do you complain?
Have you no shame? Are you not embarrassed?
Have you no shame? Do you not blush?

فَهُمfor they مِثلُlike لَذّاتِهِمtheir pleasures زائِلونpassing away
Leave the rich and their pleasures alone,
Leave the rich and their pleasures alone,
for they, like their pleasures, pass away.
For they, like their pleasures, are fleeting.
سَيُمسونَthey will be فيin سَقَرٍSaqar (Hell) خالِدينَabiding forever
وَتُمسونَand you will be فيin جَنَّةٍa garden تُنعَمونyou are blessed
They will dwell in Saqar forever,
They will end up in Hellfire eternally,
and you will dwell in a garden, enjoying bliss.
While you will end up in Paradise, living in bliss.

وَلاand not يَرتَوُنَthey quench their thirst وَلاand not يَشبَعونthey eat their fill
So you will neither thirst nor be starved,
You shall not thirst there, nor suffer hunger,
and they will neither quench their thirst nor eat their fill.
While they shall not quench their thirst nor be full.

Yours alone is the kingdom of heaven,
For you alone is the Kingdom of Heaven,
so why are you not content?
So why are you not content?

So do not grieve that you stay awake,
Do not grieve that you lie awake at night,
for you will sleep your eyelids' fill.
For soon you shall sleep a slumber that fills the eyes.

You will recline with the prophets,
You shall recline in the company of the Prophets,
luxuriant boughs will shade you,
Shaded by lush, spreading branches.

your laden camels will perfume the radiance with fragrance,
Radiance shall scent your litters with fragrance,
and wine will flow in rivers and springs.
And wine shall flow in rivers and springs.

And beautiful houris will give you wine to drink,
Beautiful maidens shall serve you the cup,
as they desire, as you desire.
Just as they desire, just as you desire.

Thus has God promised the pious,
Thus has God promised the people of piety,
and you are they, O weary ones.
And you are they, O weary ones.

Do you not believe the word of the Book?
Do you not believe in the word of the Book?
Then woe to you! You are unbelievers.
Then woe to you, for you are unbelievers.
